Oakland Teachers Voted To Strike, OUSD Statement

ONN – Oakland Teachers May Strike After February 15th Final Report Release.

The Oakland Education Association voted to hold a strike after February 15, 2019, unless differences with the Oakland Unified School District could be worked out. Here is the Oakland Unified School District Statement:

Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) supports and values all of our talented and hardworking staff. Our esteemed teachers and classified employees should be fairly compensated for the important work they do every day to educate the next generation of Oakland leaders.

We support a wage increase for all of our employees, but we must also work within the reality of our financial situation.

The Oakland Education Association (OEA) and OUSD engaged in the Public Employee Relations Board (PERB) Fact-finding hearing all day on January 31 and February 1, 2019. During this process:

● Both the OEA and OUSD presented information to a three-member panel of fact finders
● While key movement was made by both parties, we did not come to an agreement by the conclusion of the 2-day hearing
● The PERB-appointed panel member presented a written proposal to both parties that the District is currently evaluating

Although this afternoon OEA announced that their members have voted to authorize a strike after the February 15, 2019 release of the Fact-finding report, we are hopeful that we can come to an agreement with as little disruption to students’ lives as possible.

“We believe that our teachers deserve a fair wage, and we are doing everything we can to find a solution,” said Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell. “We will continue to advocate for more funding from the state and find a way to compensate our teachers fairly.”

Stay tuned.
