Oakland’s Planning & Building Department Continues to Pilot New Service Offerings: Maintains Extended Permit Counter Hours for Small-Scale Residential Projects

Oakland, CA – After a summer season trial, Oakland’s Planning & Building Department will continue to offer extended permit counter hours, allowing the community more time to submit permit applications and have work approved.

The target audience for these extended hours includes residential owners who are seeking permits to work on small-scale home additions or Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). “We are looking at this as a chance to offer services to our community members who need to work with our staff face-to-face but may work full time or find it otherwise challenging to come in during regular business hours,” states William Gilchrist, Director of Planning & Building.

Examples of small residential projects include:

Accessory Dwelling Units
Home repairs, such as window and facade changes, and fence installations
Home modifications, such as rear additions

All business conducted during these extended hours will still occur at the Planning & Building counters located in 250 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, on the 2nd floor. Customers can drop in or make an appointment in advance by calling the Appointment Hotline at (510) 238-3940. Customers using the extended service hours are also able to access the building’s parking garage below – located on 16th St. at Clay St. – free of charge, 5 – 7pm.
