2022 Oakland Mayoral And City Council Election Information And Interviews

Oakland will have a new mayor in this year 2022, and the main question on the minds of Oaklanders, and the entire country, and much of the world, is just who that will be. Current Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf is the first two-term mayor Oakland has had since Jerry Brown. And because of that length of tenure, the Mayor has greatly changed our city, and many would say it’s not for the better, some would say it is for the better. Regardless, the fact is, the next mayor of Oakland will be faced with one question: how will you impact Oakland?

That same question will go to the candidates for the open seats on The Oakland City Council Seats: how will you impact Oakland? It’s a deliberately open-ended question.

To get a preliminary answer to that question, ZENNIE62MEDIA embarked on holding a series of Zennie62 YouTube Live livestream interviews with as many of the 2022 Oakland Mayoral Election Candidates as possible.

The Oakland City Council Candidates for 2022

Oakland City Council Seats In Districts 2, 4, and 6

Oakland City Council District Two: Nikki Bas

Oakland City Council District Four: Janani Ramachandran

Oakland City Council District Six: Paulina Gonzalez, Kevin Jenkins, Loren Taylor

Note: California Election Code 10220.5 prohibits Councilmember Taylor from running for re-election for that seat, and for Mayor of Oakland, at the same time.

Per California Elections Code number 10220.5: Nomination papers for more than one municipal office or term of office prohibited. Which reads:

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a candidate shall not file nomination papers for more than one municipal office or term of office for the same municipality in the same election.

What’s clear is that Taylor has done so by already early notifying the City Clerk’s Office of his intent to run for re-election, which is why his name was on the City’s election page, then filing for Mayor of Oakland but not having his name removed from contention for the office he holds right now. I addressed that problem with Councilmember Taylor last month, December, in our interview, and he assured me that he would be focused on the mayoral election. But Councilmember Sheng Thao was in the same position, two months ago, yet removed her name from the race for Oakland City Council District Four.

There is no one running for the seat currently occupied by Courtney Ruby, and Ruby has not made any move indicating she’s running for re-election as of this January 12th, 2022 day.
