Why is multi-millionaire, yacht-owning, flashy-car-driving, $100 million BP Petroleum Lawsuit winning, Houston Super Lawyer Tony Buzbee seeking a six-figure settlement from Houston Texans Quarterback Deshaun Watson?
Is Tony Buzbee racist? The Texans Watson has been the undisputed sports king of Houston, so it should come as no surprise that, all of a sudden, an nationally-unknown lawyer described by the local media as “eccentric”, “anti-gay”, “colorful”, “a trumper”, “wealthy”, “psycho”, “racist”, and also “A truth-challenged, opportunistic personal injury trial lawyer”, would file a sexual assault lawsuit against the former Clemson star, just as he demanded to be traded after Texans stiff-armed his desire to have a greater leadership role in hiring the next head coach.

But Anthony Glenn Buzbee, AKA Tony Buzbee, has done just that, and in the process, managed to have the light shine on a pose that can only be described as racist, and call into question Buzbee’s true motivations for a set of accusations that leave many wondering what really is going on. (For his part, Buzbee brushes off claims that he’s racist, and others point to his blasting extremely racist groups, but his track record has him walking a tightrope over both sides of the racial divide.)
No one wants to believe Watson, as one fan put it, “did all of those things” to women. So, even though its an uphill climb proving the claims against Watson to be true, Buzbee presses on.
Tony Buzbee Is Filing Six, Wait 12, Now 22 Sexual Assault Lawsuits Against Deshaun Watson
Now, Buzbee says he’s filing six, wait 12, now 22 sexual assault lawsuits against Deshaun Watson. This blog post is not to look at those cases, or even question them or the women, but to look at how the case happened to form, now. In other words, did the Houston Texans have information about Deshaun Watson that was passed to Buzbee in an effort to discredit Watson after he embarrassed the team by requesting to be traded, rather than getting him help behind the scenes, and assuming he actually did do what he’s accused of?
Watson asserts that he is innocent:
“As a result of a social media post by a publicity seeking plaintiff’s lawyer, I recently became aware of a lawsuit that has apparently been filed against me. I haven’t yet seen the complaint, but I know this, I have never treated any woman with anything other than the utmost respect. The plaintiff’s lawyer claims this isn’t about money, but before filing the suit, he made a baseless six figure settlement demand, which I quickly rejected. Unlike him, this isn’t about money for me. It’s about clearing my name, and I look forward to doing that.”
Or, as the first case suggests, is this a random massage therapist with a weird, hard-to-prove, Watson story who answered Tony’s calls to sue Watson? The case has one big red flag: the first plaintiff claims she gets her clients through Instagram. I have never seen a massage therapist who worked exclusively through Instagram. I’ve seen a lot of women who show skin and flesh, and are models or fit models, but I’ve never seen a massage therapist who got clients through Instagram. That, in itself, opens a lot of questions regarding the true existence of a business – the existence of a corporate veil. Instagram has no way to allow someone to get paid for service. That has to be done in a makeshift way, and in all, it’s something the IRS would frown on, or worse. It also looks like the perfect cover for someone who may be working as a prostitute.
The Buzbee Law Firm Has A Record Of Using The Names Of People As Clients Who Never Hired The Organization
If Tony Buzbee used the kind of class-action lawsuit way of gathering many people with similar grievances to join together and file a lawsuit, and the information on the women did not come from the Houston Texans, then it would also seem to follow a pattern where Buzbee uses questionable tactics to gain clients who have paper-thin claims – or even know that he’s representing them. Take the Hurricane Harvey matter – or, if you’re Tony, maybe you should forget it.
The Southwest Texas Record reports that in an effort to make money from the tragedy off Hurricane Harvey, The Buzbee Law Firm filed nearly 400 suits against insurers on behalf of clients who said they were impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Moreover, the publication reports that The Buzbee Law Firm partnered with another law firm who got clients with Spanish surnames via tables at flea markets. Moreover, it was found that The Buzbee Law Firm did not actually represent all 400 plaintiffs, but was presenting itself as if it did. Additionally, the Southwest Texas Record reports The Buzbee Law Firm’s practice of claiming to represent people who had no knowledge that their names were used in a lawsuit was common.
This is what the Southwest Texas Record reported about the case and about The Buzbee Law Firm:
Around half of the suits were brought against The Texas FAIR Plan Association, which was created by law to provide residential property insurance to persons who are unable to obtain coverage through the voluntary market.
Court records show the vast majority of the cases appear to be filed on behalf of plaintiffs with Hispanic surnames.
Furthermore, there are several attorneys not from Buzbee’s firm listed as co-counsel on the Harvey suits, attorneys who work for the Law Offices of Manuel Solis – a law firm that markets itself to Spanish-speaking individuals and is known for setting up booths at flea markets across Texas in search of clients impacted by severe weather events.
When asked if Solis referred the cases to him, Buzbee declined to name names.
“We have handled these cases from the beginning,” Buzbee said. “They came to us directly, but also many were referred to us.”
While the question of who exactly referred the cases to Buzbee remains unclear, another query, one being posed by a defendant insurer, has come to light – does the attorney actually represent all the plaintiffs in his lawsuits?
So, given the film-flammery involved, why would Tony Buzbee go through the trouble to place himself and his law firm under a light that would tarnish his reputation?
From this blogger’s position, in my opinion, it looks at first glance like Tony Buzbee has an issue with Black men in power. As a Texas A&M regent in late 2017, Buzbee ordered the immediate dismissal of then-head coach Kevin Sumlin, and after The Aggies blew a 44 to 10 lead, even though Sumlin was under attacks where his wife was receiving racist hate male. There’s no record of Buzbee coming to Sumlin’s defense in the wake of the racist hate male, Nope. Buzbee, drunk from media attention, just pressed on with calls to fire Coach Sumlin.
Then, Buzbee ran against the incumbent Mayor Sylvester Turner, and decided to make his own version of the Willie Horton dog-whistle-racism ad. According to Style Magazine, Buzbee ran an ad that featured two African Americans and two Latinos in a garbage truck. One is the Houston Mayor Turner, and the other two are City of Houston Latino department heads: Samuel Pena, Fire Chief and Art Acevedo, Police Chief.
And do not think Buzbee hired someone to do this, or a campaign worker did it; Buzbee put it on his social media accounts without a care in the World that he would be considered racist. And considering that was not the first racist act he did against Turner, it’s no wonder why. In the early third of 2019, Buzbee attacked Mayor Turner for running a “pay-to-play” operation, even though there was zero proof of the claim, and many civic safeguards against such actions. But Buzbee, so deep in the use of dog-whistle racism as to be in a trance-like state of stupidity, didn’t stop with his actions. It’s no wonder Houston blogger John Coby wrote this hilarious take about Buzbee in 2019:
If you haven’t figured it out by now, Tony Busby is a Republican and it was no clearer than the last two days of the campaign. He sent out out an anti-LGBTQ mailer and Donald Trump endorsed him via a text. Some Republican party leaders even volunteered to send worthless robocalls. That pretty much solidified his stand in the Republican Party.
But we all knew this when he entered the race. On one hand, Busby donated over $1 million to Trump then went to his inauguration ball. He sought the endorsement of an anti-LGBTQ organization led by the homophobic poo-bah himself, Steve Hotze. He would said anything to anyone to get anything. For the republicans it didn’t work so well. They refused to endorse him even though they endorsed two of the absolute worst candidates to run for office, Dolcefino and Dick.
On the other hand, he attempted to also play the Democrats by donating to the Harris County Democratic Party. For his $180,000 contribution he got boo-ed and ran out of and Executive Meeting by hundreds of precinct chairs who gladly took and spent his money to wipe out all the republican judges in Harris County. That didn’t work out so well for Busby either.
So as Tony Buzbee said, he fights with both hands and drinks with both hands but in the end he had to beat off both parties with both hands. And it got sticky.
And stickier still is his proximity to the Houston Texans. While social media has rumored that Tony Buzbee lives near the home of the now-late Houston Texans Owner Bob McNair, Google and several news publications, and Google Maps, provide their addresses and show they live within a two-minute walk of each other in Houston’s expensive River Oaks enclave: Tony’s at 1722 River Oaks Blvd and Mr. McNair’s at 1821 River Oaks Blvd. That’s public information stemming from Tony’s sharing with the media his then-newly-purchased mansion in 2013, and then for the Trump fundraiser in 2016 – you can see the map and photo for yourself, here:
That’s too close for comfort.
Additionally, even though Tony now says he doesn’t care about football, or know the McNairs as neighbors, he certainly took out this billboard to call out Cal McNair about Johnny Manziel:
Tony Buzbee, the attorney who is bringing charges against Deshaun Watson, once put up billboards & asked his “neighbor” Cal McNair, whom he is rumored to be friends with, to draft Jonny Manziel.
Something tells us the relationship between McNair and Buzbee will be talked about. pic.twitter.com/JbJhElisuq

Still, with all of the obvious film-flammery Tony appears to operate under, and the rather gauche legal aspects of this Watson matter for which Buzbee is to blame, I do take issue with the personal attacks on Tony Buzbee and his family with respect to Deshaun Watson. Tony explains what’s happened to him and his family in this Facebook post:
Third lawsuit of now six to be filed, against Deshaun Watson, alleging assault. This one is the most egregious, to date. Again, I won’t share details here, but we have open courts in our Texas Constitution, meaning all lawsuits are public record. Our staff has received numerous calls. We screen each one, and I personally talk with and screen any individual on whose behalf we file. I’ve been doing this a long time. I don’t need “fame,” and, to be quite honest, and I say this as modestly as I can, if I never made another penny I would be quite okay. Point is, I’m not pursuing these cases for the money, and every woman who has filed thus far has only plead the minimum amount to invoke the court’s jurisdiction ($500). This isn’t about the money!! And to be clear: I’ve had many high profile cases in my life. I represented a sitting governor when he faced life in prison. I’ve represented widows, orphans, amputees, and those horribly burned or injured. As lead, I’ve handled many mass torts and class actions recovering hundreds of millions of dollars. I’ve tried and won some of the largest cases in Texas history. But, I will say I’ve never faced the nastiness and vitriol I’ve experienced in this case. People are crazy! Threatening my kids? People I know? Threatening my fiancé? Hoping my dog gets hit by a truck?? Telling me they will kill me or they hope I die? All because of football?? Get a grip!! Yet: We won’t be deterred or intimidated by key board warriors. As a Recon Marine I’ve seen danger—I’m not at all concerned by dumb shits with a keyboard. Haha. I’ll continue to proudly represent those who are written off and marginalized in our society. These cases are exactly why many of us became lawyers.
There’s a lot more to this story than I’ve revealed here, but its a start, and a gnarly one. Right now, Texans are in big trouble for the cosmetics of this. If it comes out that the organization did try to set up Watson behind the scenes, we may see the largest season ticket dump in NFL History. The worst-case scenario could completely destroy what good will the NFL has built with the black community in America. Tony Buzbee has elected to attack a black male NFL football star with a giant following and a here-to-fore teflon image, and the lawyer believes he’s found a big fish – but that fish could come back to bite him in the butt.
Stay tuned.
