Annie Campbell Washington Not Running For Re-election To Oakland City Council District 4 Seat

Annie Campbell Washington Not Running For re-election?

Annie Campbell Washington, the popular Oakland City Council District 4 Representative, has announced she is not running for re-election in 2018. The news shocked Oakland’s political establishment, and has led to speculation on both why she made the decision, and who will replace her. Councilmember Campbell Washington had no opposition in her re-election bid; now she’s leaving on January of 2019.

This is the press release she posted:

Dear Friends,

After 18 years of serving the Community that I love, the City of Oakland, I am announcing that I will not be seeking re-election to the Oakland City Council, District 4. This is a decision I have not come to lightly.

Although January 2019 will mark the end to my role as a City Councilmember, I will remain deeply involved and committed to Oakland. I’m excited to continue working on the Sweetened Beverage Tax, Oakland Promise and the Oakland Children’s Initiative, among others. I am thankful for the opportunities to serve the public in Oakland.

I am extremely grateful for all the work that has been accomplished during my term and for the phenomenal residents of District 4. I feel tremendously fortunate to have been able to work side by side with so many dedicated and talented Oaklanders.

In Service To Oakland,

In his video-blog post, our founder and CEO Zennie Abraham expressed his view:

While Annie Campbell Washington told KPIX that the reason for her decision was “antics and corruption” – other Oakland elected official speculated to Abraham that it was for more personal reasons. Abraham called Campbell Washington but it was not answered, nor did she leave a message.
