Ok, here we go again with another example of an NFL coach hired out of retirement or because he knows someone, and skipping talented black guys like Marvin Lewis, Derek Mason (hired as DC at Auburn), Kris Richard, and Winston Moss, That was the case for Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Arthur Smith, who – after claming to interview many defensive coordinator candidates, picked a guy in Pees who had come out of retirement before to coach the same position with the Tennessee Titans, only to go back into retirement after just one year.
What’s the problem that keeps Dean Pees going back into retirement? A tendency to design defenses that blow leads, a particular problem with the Ravens and one that came up again with the Titans. And while some may point to the Titans beating Kansas City that 2019 year, KC came back and won when it counted: for the AFC Championship Game and a trip to Super Bowl 54.
Then, Pees retired yet again. Why is he back now? Because Arthur Smith, the Titans Offensive Coordinator, worked with him that year. Wow.
No wonder why more talented and competent black coaches are passed by. White head coaches pick their friends. The last time I checked, that was called coach killing: hiring friends who were good enough to coach, but not good enough to bring Super Bowl Championships.m
