Black Student Union & Latinos Unidos Cease to Exist at Head-Royce School Following Administration Ignoring Ongoing Requests About Systematic Change
Oakland – Adult advisors to the Black Student Union and Latino’s Unidos at Head-Royce School located in the hills of Oakland, announced Thursday, December 5, they would be stepping down as adult sponsors of the student affinity groups following ongoing concerns that student groups and students with intersectional identities continue to be ignored. This has caused the two groups to cease to exist under the guidelines of the school. The Black Student Union and Latino’s Unidos offer an outlet for students of color and allies to talk about issues pertaining to identity, especially race, at an independent school where issues as these are often glanced over.
Students, feeling ignored and powerless, are looking for an outlet to speak out about the issues they face at the school. Over the past few years, the administration has failed to address issues of students saying racial slurs, faculty not being held accountable for placing students of color in uncomfortable positions, and not addressing the culture which Head-Royce possesses as a private institution which does not support its minority students. In spite of concerns from students and faculty, the school continues to boast about the school’s “diversity” and system which claims to support students of color and those with intersecting identities.
Students at the school are ready to escalate this issue, in light of the hate in our country and ignorance from our school which are displaying the same attitude of those running our country.

Note from Oakland News Now Technical: this video-blog post shows the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
