Broncos Coach Nathaniel Hackett Draws 7-Step Drop Pass Play That Will Get His QBs Killed
New Denver Broncos Head Coach Nathaniel Hackett drew up this play and the Denver Broncos social media staff was only too eager to make and upload a video of him describing what he’s drawing as he does it, then post it on Twitter. In this, we get a picture into how Coach Hackett thinks about the passing game, and a possible window into a rough 2022 NFL Season for the Broncos.
We could listen to Coach Hackett break down film all day. 🤩

I can sum up the problem simply: Coach Hackett shows zero regard for time-motion study. In the play he draws up, the pass patterns are written without regard for yardage depth – he just literally jots them down. How far down field is the flanker running? 15 yards, then cut to post to 40? He does not say. His number one receiver is the split end lined up in what some call a “flex” position, and then runs a crossing pattern.
The kicker is Coach Hackett has both of his backs check blocking before releasing to the weakside, and the strongside is left wide open. There’s no one to block a blitzing strongside linebacker on a path to a quarterback executing a seven-step “controlled” drop. So, I do just that: run a 4-3 defense with a “strong” front, where three defensive linemen are occupying the center, guard, and tackle. With the tight end taking off downfield and covered by the strong safety, with the free safety high, and no called “hot pattern” or “hot read” for the quarterback to throw to, he’s going to get sacked.
The 4-3 Over Defense, or “4-3 defense with a strong front” is one used by the Kansas City Chiefs, where Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is a specialist at coaching that approach. Here’s his defensive play while Spagnuolo was the New York Giants’ Defensive Coordinator in 2017. Remember, the reason it’s called the 4-3 Over Defense, is the defensive tackle on the side away from the tight end, moves to position over the center, leaving the defensive tackle on the side where the tight end is over the guard on that side, and the end on that side over the defensive tackle. So, there’s no one to slide block out to get the outside linebacker without giving a free rush lane to one of the interior line men.
The linebackers in today’s NFL are among the fastest players on the team. Consider Micha Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL’s Fastest Man (as of this writing). He would be on the quarterback before he could take his fourth step, let alone his seventh step.
Broncos Coach Hackett just drew up the fate of the Broncos Offense in 2022: games where the quarterback is sacked four to seven times. The Broncos better have extra ice and flack jackets for their signal callers. It’s going to be a long season. That is, unless Coach Hackett sees the mathematical error of his football schematic ways, and create plays with attention paid to time and motion. In other words, how much time do I have to do X?
Stay tuned.
