Buffy Wicks: California Assemblymember Declares Strong Victory In Primary Election

OAKLAND –– Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D – Oakland) declared victory in the March 3, 2020 primary election Wednesday morning. With 100% of precincts reporting, Wicks was leading her competitors with 80.5% of the vote.

“I’m honored to serve the 15th Assembly District in Sacramento, and I’m very thankful that our vision for the East Bay, and for California, is shared by so many here at home,” said Assemblymember Wicks.

She continued, “I ran for office in 2018 promising to bring my work ethic and training as an organizer to Sacramento, to make change for California families. In my first year in the Assembly we made historic progress for California — on our affordable housing crisis, on combating gun violence, on fighting widespread hunger, and more — but we all know there is much more work to do.”

“Our communities across the East Bay deserve a fighter — someone who will listen to their concerns, and be unafraid to take on powerful interests to make progressive change. I’m looking forward to pushing for progress on the major issues impacting our communities today” said Assemblymember Wicks. “I’m ready to find solutions to our housing and homelessness crisis, protect our environment, increase funding for public schools and universities, and so much more.”

Buffy Wicks ran a historic grassroots campaign for California Assembly in 2018, in which she held 239 house parties across District 15. In her first year in Sacramento, Wicks was named the Assembly Democratic Freshman of the year by The Nooner readers, and earned an A+ Progressive from Courage Score, The People’s Report Card.

Wicks is endorsed by U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, Governor Gavin Newsom, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin, Planned Parenthood Action of Northern California, California Teachers Association, and Service Employees International Union California.
