A 98-year-old Ukrainian woman said she walked 10 kilometres under shelling in just her slippers, supporting herself with sticks and sleeping on the ground. She left Ocheretyne, in Russian-occupied Donetsk, in an effort to reach areas controlled by Kyiv. In a video posted by Ukraine’s police on social media on Monday, the woman — identified as Lidia Stepanivna — said she had walked without food or water, and fell several times. “I survived World War Two, and I am surviving this war,” Stepanivna said, as she sat on a bed in a shelter. “That war was different. I saw it as well. None of the houses were burnt down. Houses are burning now.” Ukraine’s interior ministry said in a statement that the woman was discovered by Ukraine’s military in the evening and handed to the police, who took her to a shelter for evacuees. Hundreds of helmeted police breached barricades at a pro-Palestinian encampment on the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) campus early on Thursday. The police dismantled the camp, arrested protesters, and removed them from the UCLA campus. Supporters of the student protesters called the university’s decision to bring in police and other law enforcement agencies “illegitimate” and “outrageous”. “I think in a place like UCLA where they tell you this is a place to have a free exchange of ideas and to learn about the world, yet when you stand up for Gaza, this is what happens?” Luna Hernandez, a community organizer, stated. During the pre-dawn crackdown, loud explosions were heard from flash-bang charges or stun grenades fired by police during the clash. Later in the morning, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol confirmed that there were no injuries on both ends after police swarmed the site. As Canada is braces for another record wildfire season, the climate crisis is bleeding into another major challenge facing Canadians — housing. A new BMO report released Monday found climate-related factors such as wildfires, floods, heatwaves, and storms will affect where 39 per cent of Canadians choose to live in the next five years. The percentage is higher among younger Canadians. It jumps to 49 per cent for millennials (those born between 1981 to 1996) and 54 per cent for gen Z Canadians (those born between 1997 to 2012), the report said. A Quebec judge has denied the request for a provisional injunction to remove protesters at McGill University as the encampment by pro-Palestinian protesters has stretched into a fifth day. A day after getting booted from question period in the House of Commons after calling the prime minister a ‘wacko,’ Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre continued to push the Trudeau government to quickly end a three-year pilot project in British Columbia that will decriminalize possession of small amounts of certain illegal drugs, including heroin, fentanyl and methamphetamine. Trudeau responded that the government is working with the province after B.C. Premiere David Eby asked Health Canada to recriminalize the use of drugs in public spaces such as hospitals and parks. “There is no time to waste,” said Poilievre, suggesting that six people die in B.C. every day because of overdoses. Both Trudeau and Poilievre accused the other of playing politics when it comes to the opioid crisis in Canada. Poilievre also demanded that Trudeau reject the city of Toronto’s request for an exemption from federal drug laws, which would see a small amount of illegal drugs decriminalized in Canada’s largest city. Edmonton police are searching abroad to find a suspect in Project Gaslight — the investigation into extortion targeting members of area’s South Asian homebuilder community. There has been 34 incidents in the Edmonton region alone between October of 2023 and the end of April 2024. Similar situations have emerged in other cities across Canada. Pottawatomie County officials confirm one person was killed when a tornado hit Westmoreland, Kansas late Tuesday afternoon. Emergency officials say the damage is “extensive.” “It took the north half of the town. It really did,” said Sheriff Shane Yager. At least 22 houses are destroyed. Authorities say the northern part of the city was hardest hit, and is where the fatality occurred. They have implemented a curfew to keep people away from the damaged areas. Eyewitness video captured the chaos on campus as a firework was thrown towards a protest encampment. “They were coming up here and just violently attacking us,” one pro-Palestinian protester said from the encampment. After a couple of hours of scuffles between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli demonstrators at UCLA, police wearing helmets and face shields formed lines and slowly separated the groups. Speaking on Tuesday from Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lashed out at the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the possibility that it could introduce arrest warrants against Netanyahu and other top officials for alleged violations of international law. “This is an outrage of historic proportions,” Netanyahu said, suggesting that the ICC, based in The Hague, is contemplating issuing arrest warrants. “It will also be the first time that a democratic country fighting for its life according to the rules of war is itself accused of war crimes,” he added. Israel is not a member of the ICC and does not recognize its jurisdiction, but the Palestinian territories were admitted as a member state in 2015. A Nova Scotia man who suffered a medical emergency in Cuba is stuck waiting in a hospital, after his family was told no hospitals in the province are able to admit him due to a lack of available beds. Their family vacation quickly came to a halt after 63-year-old Murray Balser broke his hip on a boating excursion. His family says due to a shortage of available hospital beds in Nova Scotia, he was forced to stay in a Cuban hospital for a week and a half. Amber Fryday reports. Canada became the first country in the world to have individual warning labels on each cigarette after its regulations officially rolled out on Tuesday, with king-size cigarettes the first to be wrapped with the new information. Warning labels on cigarette packaging isn’t new, but this is the first time any country has put the labels directly on the cigarettes themselves, with advocates hoping it will help deter smoking further as people will see the warning as they light up. Police provided an update on Tuesday after four law enforcement officers were killed and four others were wounded in a shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina while trying to serve a warrant Monday afternoon. The suspect left the house while armed, police said, and officers opened fire and shot him in the front yard, where he was pronounced dead. He was later identified by police as Terry Clark Hughes, Jr., 39. During a press conference on Tuesday, police chief Johnny Jennings identified the deceased officers as well as provided an update on the ongoing investigation. An AR-15 rifle along with ammo was recovered from the scene. “It’s a scar on Charlotte, but it’s a scar that won’t heal,” Jennings said of the tragedy. Vietnam is experiencing temperatures as high as 44 degrees Celsius, while India and the Philippines are also grappling with heatwaves that are putting people’s health and livelihoods at risk. In India, at least two people have reportedly died from suspected heatstroke, while farmers in the Philippines are worried about the impact of the heat on their crops. Scientist Petch Manopawitr explained why this abnormal phenomenon occurred, saying, “This year beats the year before because of the El Niño effect, that particular region is hotter than normal,” adding that an “uninhabitable earth pattern is coming.” “We think that we are fine with the hot weather, but now with the temperature, the heatwave, and the intensity of the long period of hot weather, I think we have to make sure that people know about the risk as well,” Manopawitr said. A 14-year-old boy was killed, and four other people were injured, after a stabbing in London on Tuesday involving a man with a sword, Metropolitan Police said. Police tasered and arrested a 36-year-old man after the incident near Hainault in east London. Video footage showed a man dressed in yellow wielding what appeared to be a sword. Two members of the public and two police officers were in hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The two police officers had stab wounds requiring surgery, police added. Police said they did not believe the incident was targeted. An Edmonton couple discovered a potential prehistoric artifact in their front yard last year while doing some landscaping. Jennifer Yeoman and Hector Lomack found a 4.6-pound chunk of obsidian core, which is a type of volcanic glass that doesn’t usually form in Alberta due to the lack of volcanoes. Homicide investigators have arrested a 28-year-old Surrey man in connection with a fatal stabbing in White Rock last week. Kulwinder Singh Sohi was attacked on the night of April 23 on the community’s popular beach promenade in B.C. Another person was stabbed just 48 hours after another man was stabbed in the neck in the same part of White Rock. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. In Georgia, protests have erupted over a proposed law requiring organizations with foreign funding to register their activities with the government. Critics compare the bill to similar legislation used to silence opposition groups in Russia. Thousands of Georgians marched through the capital, Tbilisi, on Sunday to voice their opposition to the bill, with opposition parties and civil society groups calling for mass protests against its expected passage. “There are hundreds of such NGOs who have done so much good for Georgia and now they face being stigmatized and possibly shut down,” protester Nika Shurgaia said. “I’m angry and I’m sad,” another protestor said. The bill must pass three readings in parliament to become law, as well as overcome a veto by Georgia’s figurehead president, who opposes it. If passed, the draft law would require organizations receiving more than 20 per cent of their funding from abroad to register as “foreign agents” or face fines.
