The River Seine in Paris is set to be a venue for open swimming events for the upcoming summer Olympics, but the safety of the water has remained an issue for people in the lead-up to the games. Last week, test result showed unsafe levels of E. coli in the river — though new testing this week found the levels of E. coli and enterococci bacteria were below legal thresholds. While health experts say E. coli infection in the water can happen, it’s more an indicator of parasites or viruses that could be contagious. As Sean Previl reports, officials say they’re optimistic the games in the river will go ahead, but it’s yet to be seen what could change in the final weeks before the events. Toronto police will provide details on Friday about a major auto theft and re-vinning investigation. Insp. Heather Nicols and Det. Toronto has experienced a significant increase in auto thefts, with over 12,000 vehicles stolen in 2023. This translates to an alarming average of 34 vehicles stolen daily, or one vehicle every 40 minutes. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Toronto has topped the list of costliest cities in Ontario for auto theft claims, experiencing a 561 per cent increase in costs over the past five years. A fire broke out at a partially decommissioned railway trestle in Richmond, causing heavy smoke near the south end of the Oak Street Bridge on Thursday. The plume of smoke was visible from across Metro Vancouver. Video footage showed the flames engulfing the historic Marpole Railroad Bridge, originally constructed in 1902. Due to the smoke, Metro Vancouver issued an Air Quality Bulletin for all areas of the region, advising residents to move indoors if they experience adverse effects. Global’s Jordan Armstrong reports. A Collingwood man has pleaded guilty to the murder of his wife after her body was found inside a burning SUV more than a year ago. In a Barrie courtroom Thursday afternoon, James Schwalm pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 40-year-old Ashley Schwalm. On Jan. 26, 2023, Ontario Provincial Police found a wrecked SUV on Arrowhead Road in Collingwood, which was on fire. Police found Ashley’s body inside the vehicle, and later alleged James – a former Brampton fire captain – murdered her and staged her death. On Feb. 3 police charged him with second-degree murder and indignity to a dead body. On Feb. 17, the charges were upgraded to first-degree murder. In court Thursday, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder. Two wildfires burning near Ruidoso, N.M., killed at least one person and damaged an estimated 1,400 structures — including approximately 500 homes, according to reports. Melissa Fesmire and her son Christopher Bright have lived at least 14 years in Ruidoso, and they say the fires burning through the New Mexico village are like nothing they’ve seen before. Christopher told Reuters on Wednesday that the sound of planes and sirens and the constant smell of smoke made him feel like being “in the middle of a war zone.” New Mexico Gov. Officials with the City of Calgary will update the critical water main break on Thursday at 2 p.m. MST. Earlier in the day, Mayor Jyoti Gondek cautioned Calgarians that there could still be delays or unplanned setbacks as city crews aim to have water flowing as usual by July 5. In Wednesday afternoon’s update on the two-week-old Calgary water crisis, the city said its regular water supply will likely be restored on the earlier end of the timeline estimate — in about three weeks rather than five. Michael Thompson, general manager of infrastructure services, said that means repairs could be completed by July 5. In a video statement Thursday morning, Gondek said there is still a lot of work to be done before Calgarians can go back to normal water usage, and that the July 5 goal is a “best-case estimate at this point in time.” “We have to be prepared that a potential site may require a bit more of a repair than we expected or that water testing is going to take a little bit more time,” she said. The demonstrations brought the central business district to a standstill as police threw tear gas cannisters and opened water cannons on protesters as they advanced toward the Parliament buildings. The protesters are demanding legislators vote against the bill and the proposed tax changes, accusing Kenyan President William Ruto on pulling back on his pledge to reduce taxes and lower the cost of living. Among the proposals in the budget are increased taxes on vegetable oil and fuel and a 2.75 per cent levy on income, with the money going toward the national medical insurance program. Proposals to introduce a 16 per cent value-added tax on bread and an annual tax on automobiles were removed Tuesday after a meeting between Ruto and members of the ruling party. The storm brought heavy rainfall and flooding to the affected areas, prompting road closures and flight cancellations. Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek provided another update on Thursday about the work being done to repair a catastrophic water main break and return the city’s water supply to normal, while also applauding the efforts of Calgarians and businesses alike to limit water usage. Gondek also outlined the efforts Calgary Stampede leadership is taking to move forward with the outdoor show despite water restrictions. This includes using non-potable or non-treated water for some tasks like cleaning and caring for the chuckwagon track. Gondek said the Stampede is also working with the province to find treated water that can be trucked in to supply drinking water for both visitors to the Stampede and livestock. Despite these efforts, she says the city is doing “everything possible” to get the city back to a normal flow of water by July 5. At least 31 people died and over 60 are being treated in hospitals after consuming tainted liquor in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a government spokesperson said on Thursday. Over 100 people are suffering from vomiting, stomach ache and diarrhea. Police arrested Govindaraj, 49, who goes by his first name, for selling illicit liquor and also seized 200 litres of the methanol-mixed alcoholic drink, the government said. The state government suspended at least 10 officials, including the district’s collector and police chief, over the illicit liquor incident, according to a statement. More than a dozen people died last year in a similar incident in a nearby district in Tamil Nadu. She left Ocheretyne, in Russian-occupied Donetsk, in an effort to reach areas controlled by Kyiv. In a video posted by Ukraine’s police on social media on Monday, the woman — identified as Lidia Stepanivna — said she had walked without food or water, and fell several times. “I survived World War Two, and I am surviving this war,” Stepanivna said, as she sat on a bed in a shelter. “That war was different. As Canada is braces for another record wildfire season, the climate crisis is bleeding into another major challenge facing Canadians — housing. A new BMO report released Monday found climate-related factors such as wildfires, floods, heatwaves, and storms will affect where 39 per cent of Canadians choose to live in the next five years. The percentage is higher among younger Canadians. It jumps to 49 per cent for millennials (those born between 1981 to 1996) and 54 per cent for gen Z Canadians (those born between 1997 to 2012), the report said. A Quebec judge has denied the request for a provisional injunction to remove protesters at McGill University as the encampment by pro-Palestinian protesters has stretched into a fifth day. The decision comes after a lawyer representing two students asked a judge to order a “restricted area” preventing five pro-Palestinian groups from protesting within 100 metres of every building at McGill’s downtown campus for 10 days. The students, who both attend McGill, say the protests have created an atmosphere of aggression and made them feel unsafe. A day after getting booted from question period in the House of Commons after calling the prime minister a ‘wacko,’ Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre continued to push the Trudeau government to quickly end a three-year pilot project in British Columbia that will decriminalize possession of small amounts of certain illegal drugs, including heroin, fentanyl and methamphetamine. Trudeau responded that the government is working with the province after B.C. Premiere David Eby asked Health Canada to recriminalize the use of drugs in public spaces such as hospitals and parks. “There is no time to waste,” said Poilievre, suggesting that six people die in B.C. every day because of overdoses. Both Trudeau and Poilievre accused the other of playing politics when it comes to the opioid crisis in Canada. Poilievre also demanded that Trudeau reject the city of Toronto’s request for an exemption from federal drug laws, which would see a small amount of illegal drugs decriminalized in Canada’s largest city. The effect resulted in a Mordor-like sky, creating a fascinating and otherworldly sight. Residents living near the volcano described the mountain’s eruption as “massive” and said that “rocks started raining on us,” as they waited on Wednesday for the nation’s military ship to evacuate them away from the volcano. “Fire, lightning and the grumble of the mountain. We felt it, all the windows were shaking,” resident Dian Ningsih Gumunggilung said. The eruption, which spewed lava and flows of ash clouds, prompted authorities to evacuate more than 12,000 people from Tagulandang, the nearest island from the volcano. Edmonton police are searching abroad to find a suspect in Project Gaslight — the investigation into extortion targeting members of area’s South Asian homebuilder community. There has been 34 incidents in the Edmonton region alone between October of 2023 and the end of April 2024. Similar situations have emerged in other cities across Canada. Pottawatomie County officials confirm one person was killed when a tornado hit Westmoreland, Kansas late Tuesday afternoon. Emergency officials say the damage is “extensive.” “It took the north half of the town. It really did,” said Sheriff Shane Yager. At least 22 houses are destroyed. Authorities say the northern part of the city was hardest hit, and is where the fatality occurred. They have implemented a curfew to keep people away from the damaged areas. Dueling groups of protesters clashed overnight at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), grappling in fistfights and shoving, kicking and using sticks to beat one another and tearing down tent encampments. Eyewitness video captured the chaos on campus as a firework was thrown towards a protest encampment. “They were coming up here and just violently attacking us,” one pro-Palestinian protester said from the encampment. After a couple of hours of scuffles between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli demonstrators at UCLA, police wearing helmets and face shields formed lines and slowly separated the groups. That appeared to quell the violence.
