UNRWA’s Lazzarini says Rafah invasion could hinge on ceasefire talks this week

“There is an extraordinary deep anxiety in Gaza” right now, as people fear a possible invasion of Rafah, says Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. The prospects of such an invasion “will all depend on whether a ceasefire deal will be reached this week”, the UNRWA chief said during a briefing in Geneva. “People have not yet been asked to evacuate from Rafah,” he added. “But there is a sense that if there is not a ceasefire deal this week, it could happen at any time.” UNRWA chief Lazzarini says there is more food on offer at markets in northern Gaza after an increase in supply in April. However, these supplies are still far from accessible to most people who have no cash left to spend nearly seven months into the war, he said. Lazzarini also noted that UNRWA officials on the ground in Gaza describe residents as experiencing a constant state of trauma due to ongoing military attacks, hunger and overall deteriorating conditions. “We are not talking any more about PTSD, but CTSD: Constant traumatic stress disorder,” Lazzarini said. Cornell student suspended over Gaza protest speaks out

Cornell University in the state of New York is suspending enrolment and study for students who participate in campus protests demanding an end to Israel’s war on Gaza. The school says that this is because students set up an encampment which they did not seek permission for. Across many American universities – student protesters have set up encampments on their campuses and are calling for their universities to withdraw investment from companies with links to the Israeli military. Nick Wilson is a Second-year undergraduate student at Cornell University and a protest organiser with the Coalition for Mutual Liberation. He was suspended two days ago for participating in a demonstration at the campus against Israel’s war on Gaza. He joins us from Ithaca, New York to explain his side of the story. Police have moved in to clear out dozens of protesters who had camped out in a courtyard of Sorbonne University in Paris to protest against Israel’s war on Gaza, the Reuters news agency reports, citing a student at the scene. The demonstration took place three days after protests at the French capital’s elite Sciences Po and came in the wake of rallies on campuses across the US against the war. “We have every reason like in Yale, in Columbia, in Sciences Po … to condemn what we can see is happening,” the student, who only gave his name as Leonard, said at another rally outside the gates of the Sorbonne. The university, one of the world’s oldest, closed its buildings for the day during the peaceful protests. Students chanted “Free Palestine” and urged the institution to condemn Israel.
