Charlie Michelson Quits Oakland City Council District Four Race

Oakland News Now – Charlie Michelson Quits Oakland City Council District Four Race

Charlie Michelson, who was arguably the front runner in the Oakland City Council District Four Race, shocked the campaign battle by announcing his decision to quit just an hour ago.

Charlie was the pick of Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf to fill the seat currently held by Annie Campbell Washington. Interestingly, this is the second District Four Race participant Schaaf has endorsed, who dropped out; the first was Chris Young.

Here’s the letter Charlie sent out:

Friends,

I regret to inform you that in recent days, a deeply personal matter has come up, and unfortunately, I cannot continue the race for Oakland City Council. While it is too late to formally remove my name from the ballot–and I realize this may cause some confusion–I have suspended all campaign activity, and hereby withdraw my candidacy for District 4 City Councilmember.

This was an incredibly hard decision to make, and I am saddened to let my supporters down. But for many reasons, it is the right decision for me and my family. I want to thank everyone, our supporters, the campaign team, our amazing volunteers, and of course all of you, for the support you’ve shown me these past few months. I’m proud of the campaign we ran.

There is a very strong field of candidates running, so I’m confident that voters have good choices for who will represent District 4 on the City Council. To my donors, thank you so much for your generous support. We will be reaching out in the coming weeks about returning unspent funds.

I will continue my work for Oakland kids with non-profit organizations around the city, and I look forward to seeing you around town. Thank you so much again, for being the best supporters a candidate could ask for.

Sincerely,

Charlie
