City Of Oakland Howard Terminal Presentation To Alameda County A Massive Disaster – Part 2. Racism
Part 2 of my series on the historically awful City of Oakland Howard Terminal Presentation focuses on the lack of racial diversity among the City of Oakland presenters.
Between Oakland City Administrator Ed Reiskin, Oakland Deputy City Administrator Betsy Lake, Howard Terminal Project Manager Molly Maybrun, and Robert Gamble, representing the consulting firm Public Financial Management, this is the first time in my history with the City of Oakland (going back to 1986) that I’ve ever seen an all-white professional group represent Oakland’s economic and redevelopment effort.
The City of Oakland, as well as the City and County of San Francisco, has had a policy of insisting on hiring consultants of color, or having a prime consultant include a senior-level black employee on the team working with San Francisco or Oakland. What’s going on, here? And did anyone in the group even stop to consider the image they’re presenting? Did this even occur to A’s President Dave Kaval?
Moreover, it seems like they’re sending the message that the only diversity Oakland really cares about is gender. It’s a complete slap in the face of America’s cultural tide of diversity, led by a number of activist-minded brands like Unilever’s DOVE, Procter and Gamble, and the list goes on. All in the wake of the George Floyd Murder of a year ago, even though many companies led the charge years before that tragedy.
The other subtext message here is that the white guys know best: an idea rapidly destroyed when one considers that Mr. Gamble is arguably responsible for the City of Oakland’s awful explanation why the meeting with the County of Alameda was necessary – even though he let the City Administrator and Deputy City Administrator do the heavy lifting. Something I focus on in the previous and first vlog in this series, this one:

Note from Zennie62Media’s Zennie62 YouTube and Oakland News Now Today Blog SF Bay Area: this video-blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media , Inc. mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
