Oakland residents will have three opportunities in the coming weeks to safely and legally dispose of large unwanted items – as part of a City effort to educate Oakland residents about existing Bulky Pickup service that allows residents to make a call to schedule the same service at their own curbside.

The Bulky Block Party is a series of three events, two weeks apart and each held at a different location across Oakland, where residents will be able to dispose of large items for free. The series serves primarily as a promotion of Oakland’s Bulky Pickup service, which all residents are entitled to use for no-extra-charge disposal of large items they can place at their own curb by appointment.

“Oaklanders know how to turn anything into a party, and the Bulky Block Party is no different,” Mayor Libby Schaaf said. “Oaklanders should celebrate that they get to drop off their old mattresses, couches, and bulky goods for free, but they should also rejoice that they’re helping to keep Oakland free from abandoned debris. They also get to learn how to make future bulky pick-up appointments at their homes and help keep their communities clutter-free.”

“I want to thank the hardworking staff of Oakland Public Works and all our partners for going the extra mile to make the Bulky Block Party a successful event that serves our community,” OPW Director Jason Mitchell said. “We all love a party, but we also love a job well done. With these events our crews will deliver both.”

Residents who take advantage of the Bulky Block Party events will be welcomed with a smile and information about the Bulky Pickup service, and assisted in unloading their items for disposal. Food trucks and music will cement the party atmosphere and send the message that we all win and have more fun when we work together to keep Oakland clean!

The Bulky Block Party events will each accept large items from residents from 9am to 1pm at these dates and locations:

East Oakland: August 25th – 7101 Edgewater Drive
Central: September 15th – 250 Victory Court
North Oakland/West Oakland: September 29th – Engineer Road at Wake Avenue
