Derreck Johnson Running For Oakland Mayor Plays Dangerous Game With Black Media

As stated in the video-blog, about a month ago, I began a series of text and email exchanges to the objective of interviewing Derreck Johnson about his run for Mayor of Oakland.  We set on one tentative date, but Derreck said he was sick and that we would circle back later.   Ok.   But one comment he made in this text stayed with me.   Have a look:

Derreck Johnson Wrote That Zennie62Media Would Interview Him About His Mayoral Run Before Other Media, Then Failed To Do That

Well, the later never came from Derreck Johnson, even as I noticed his posts on Instagram where he didn’t seem all that sick.  I then reached out to his assistant to restart the process toward an interview, but received no feedback.  At that point, I figured something was up, but the whole matter is number 105 down the list of things I have to take care of, with number one being helping my Mom, and number two running ZENNIE62MEDIA, INC.

So, then I see a mention of Derreck’s announcement that he’s running in mainstream white media, and that simple act made the text you see above of interest.  As stated in the vlog, I now regard Derreck Johnson’s run for Mayor as more an ego play than a true interest in the City of Oakland.  Unfortunately, there’s a fair number people running who seem to think that media has to talk to them and about them in the way they want.  That’s not true.

The fact is that media today is dramatically different than it was even five years ago, and it seems the ones who do not get that message are the majority of the candidates running for Mayor of Oakland.  In that light, I have to give praise to Oakland District 4 Councilmember Sheng Thao, and for at least taking time to actively pay attention to my call for the use Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District (EIFD) legislation, which has at its center permission to use tax increment financing to form areas where Oakland property tax revenue can be collected and used to finance projects that help small businesses recover from the Pandemic in the case of AB464.   I have called for the use of EIFD in all of its forms and going back seven years.  Councilmember Thao is the first Oakland elected official to actually act on my call.

Sheng Thao Is Acting Like An Oakland Elected Official Who Cares

Her legislation that is to appear before the Oakland City Council this month, would cause Oakland City Staff to produce a study of the feasibility of creating a city-wide EIFD, ostensibly under AB464.  My early estimate of the tax increment revenue throw-off points to a potential $18 billion TIF revenue result.  Yes, $18 billion to help Oakland communities and small businesses recover from the Pandemic.

So, Sheng Thao is at least doing what elected officials are supposed to be doing.  And she asked me to help her construct the legislation, a gesture for which I say “thanks”.  If someone wants to call this an early endorsement, well, fine. But remember, this is rank-choice-voting, so ultimately, I’ll have a one, two, and three.  But right now, Sheng is number one, and Loren Taylor and Derreck Soo are lurking around (more on that, later).

While Derreck Johnson is not an elected official at this point, he’s running for office, but showing that he’s angle is more that of a diva candidate than a planner candidate.  Unfortunately, he thought it OK, a black man like himself who came to bat for him when a local publication used a common racist trope against him, to treat Oakland’s first YouTube Partner vlogger in a way that can only be called inappropriate.

So be it.

Stay tuned.

Note from Zennie62Media and OaklandNewsNow.com : this video-blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media , Inc. mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a YouTube channel. When the video is “liked” by Zennie62 YouTube, then it is automatically uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective here, on top of our is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours – is the use of the existing YouTube social graph on any subject in the World. Now, news is reported with a smartphone and also by promoting current content on YouTube: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary, or having a camera crew to shoot what is already on YouTube. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
