Devin White 40 Yard Dash Time: Bucs Linebacker Should Have Been Las Vegas Raiders NFL Draft Pick
Twitter lit up with tweets about the 40-yard dash time of Tampa Bay Buccaneers Linebacker Devin White. The 2019 NFL Draft 1st Round Pick participated in a virtual race against Mecole Hardman of the Kansas City Chiefs, Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings, and Henry Ruggs of the Las Vegas Raiders. Where did White come in? 3rd place in front of Jefferson.
The times were as follows:
1) Mecole Hardman – 4.22
2) Henry Ruggs – 4.26
3) Devin White – 4.37
4) Justin Jefferson – 4.5
All of the competitors were wide receivers whereas White’s a linebacker. But this marks White as the fastest linebacker in the NFL (until someone beats him), and is another painful reminder of what the Las Vegas Raiders could have had in Devin if General Manager Mike Mayock had pulled the trigger on him, rather than Clelin Ferrell.
It’s not that Clelin Ferrell is a bust pick. He’s earned 11 sacks or two more than the much more talked about Defensive End Nick Bosa with the San Francisco 49ers, who was drafted two spots in front of him. And that’s the rub: the place Ferrell was taken was the 4th pick. The Raiders could have let Ferrell drop and still drafted him, or just taken Devin White or Montez Sweat.
When an NFL team drafts a player than high, he’s got something extra that makes him a must pick person in the top-five. For Kyle Murray it was leadership, passing, and mobility. For Nick Bosa and Quinnen Williams, it was dominant play. And for Devin White, it was speed and pass rushing and run defense ability. So, for many, and considering the Raiders need at the linebacker position at the time, combined with the desire to replace Khalil Mack, Devin White was the logical choice. It’s just that Mike Mayock didn’t think so.
White’s speed makes the Bucs Defense perhaps the fastest in the NFL. There are many plays from last year where his abilities made a difference for Tampa Bay. The Bucs got the right guy – the player the Raiders needed at that point in the 1st round.
With Ferrell coming back from a COVID-19-plagued year, and one where he performed well when he returned, it will be exciting if a more normal season and a new defense under Gus Bradley is what he needs to turn in a dominant performance and be the bookend to his 2019 NFL Draft 4th Round Pick teammate Maxx Crosby. To date, Max has turned in 17 sacks, versus 11 and change for the more expensive player that is Ferrell.
Stay tuned.

Note from Zennie62Media’s Zennie62 YouTube and Oakland News Now Today Blog SF Bay Area: this video-blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media , Inc. mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
