Devin White Bucs LB $25,750 Fine For Jameis Winston Horse Collar Tackle, Unsportsmanlike Play vs Saints last Sunday
The National Football League levied not one but two fines against Tampa Bay Buccaneers Linebacker Devin White, and for his illegal horse collar tackle on former teammate and New Orleans Saints Quarterback Jameis Winston during last Sunday’s divisional contest held at Caesar’s Superdome.
From the NFL:
White, Devin TB 10/31/2021 Unsportsmanlike Conduct $10,300.00
White, Devin TB 10/31/2021 Unnecessary Roughness $15,450.00
The “Unnecessary Roughness $15,450.00” is for the horse collar tackle, and the fine is what is normally levied for that illegal action. The “Unsportsmanlike Conduct $10,300.00” is notable, because the NFL has that fine set at $10,500, not $10,300.
The fines were decided upon by three NFL legends: John Runyan, Derrick Brooks and James Thrash. Here’s the NFL page with the full schedule of fines, right here.
Was Devin White’s Action Premeditated?
The action by White, which some (including this vlogger) believe was premeditated. It damaged Winston’s left knee and in a way described as a “Joe Burrow-type” injury, and was cheered by one long-time Tampa Bay Bucs blogger. Jameis Winston was placed on injured reserve and the Saints want to take up the topic of his contract after the NFL Season. Its clear that New Orleans wants him back and badly, but he can’t play for free, (New Orleans should sign him. Better off getting it done now.)
Bucs Devin White Had Three Personal Fouls Against The Saints
The Bucs’ White had not one but three personal fouls against the Saints, marked by the Winston horse collar tackle. Later, he said this about the action against Winston:
“I’ll go back and look at it, but I thought I had him in his pads. They said my hands were too high, so I’ll take that one. I told him, ‘Man, I hate that it happened to you. You’re playing good ball right now, and I’m praying for you.’ Jameis is a good guy. He’s a great guy. I want to put an emphasis on that. He’s a great guy, and you hate to see that happen. I hope it’s not serious. I’m praying for him, and it’s a long season. So I hope he can come back and fight with his team.”
Jameis Winston Surgery In Two Weeks Then The Rehab Process Starts
As written on this platform before:
The Jameis Winston injury is exactly like that of Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow. That’s both bad news and good news: bad because of the severity of the damage, but good because the former LSU signal-caller’s experience provides a road-map for Winston.
The horsecollar tackle that Tampa Bay Buccaneers Star Linebacker Devin White used to take down Saints Star QB and former teammate Jameis Winston should be outlawed. If used, the player should be immediately ejected from the game. But given the horrors of the horsecollar tackle, why did Devin White use it against his former teammate and man he calls “his close friend”?
Why couldn’t have White just plain form tackled Winston? Why was it so important to fly by Jameis, and then grab him while in motion away from him? What was in White’s mind, and why?
That’s the question many are asking. To some, it seemed that the wind was taken out of the Tampa Bay Bucs Defense. One may think that was because Winston was the objective and that was done. Another view could be that the Tampa Bay Bucs were sad that their former teammate was taken out of the game.
But if that is really the case, how does one explain what Bucs’ defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr.’s did in his gesture towards the FOX television camera where he made fun of Jameis Winston’s “eating Ws” gesture, and just shortly after Winston’s injury. I happened to see this tweet by my friend ESPN’s Jenna Laine:
I asked Bruce Arians about Antoine Winfield Jr.'s gesture towards the television camera where he appeared to mock Jameis Winston's "eating Ws" speech, shortly after Winston's injury. Occasionally coaches see the TV copy. But he said, "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Why, of all things, did Bruce Arians not say “I’m really sorry for what happened to Jameis, and I will talk to Antoine about that because it’s not what we do” ?
Was that done because the Bucs ginned up their defense to get him out of the game? That’s the question some are asking. Personally, I think the NFL needs to investigate this.
I still think so. More soon.
