Donald Lacy Interview: His Story On “Redemption With Van Jones On CNN”

Donald Lacy has been through a trial by fire that started with the murder of his daughter in 1996, and has come to a point where he met with the man who killed her, who’s in San Quentin. That encounter is the focus of a May 12th Mother’s Day special program called “Redemption With Van Jones On CNN”. Mr. Lacy, who I’ve known for over 20 years, came on Zennie62 on YouTube to talk about that encounter, and about how Oakland itself has changed.

Don wrote this, which was used to open our talk:

I have a powerful message of redemption and forgiveness to share that people in today’s world really need to hear. On October 20, 1997 my 16 year old daughter was murdered, an innocent victim to a shooting across the street from her high school. I was devastated, but used that tragic event to start the LoveLife Foundation to work with other at risk youth to honor my daughter’s memory.
The work of the LoveLife Foundation got me invited to the White House by Hillary Clinton in 1999, and proclaimed from the floor of Congress in 2000 by Congresswoman Barbara Lee. I have been fortunate to reach thousands of youth, and my work has been recognized by the American Red Cross, The National Council on Crime and Delinquency, and many others.

On April 5 2016 the Oakland City Council adopted “Love Life” as the official motto of Oakland. Now and forever all Entering Oakland signs say; “LoveLife” on them to honor all victims of violence and to remind us all to cherish the gift of life.

Late last year CNN followed me around filming my work and some of the young people I touch. They also came with me to San Quentin prison where i visited for the first time the 1 person convicted of murdering my 16 year old daughter. I told him I forgive you on camera. This event will be part of an hour long special, and May 12, 2019 at 6:00 PM PST on CNN and will be hosted by Van Jones. This powerful event will show the world that forgiveness is possible and will hopefully inspire hundreds of thousands to do the same.

Stay tuned.
