The CES Las Vegas 2019 Keynote Speaker U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao will talk about drones. Yes, drones and driverless vehicles.
Elaine L. Chao, (or Elaine Chao) will give the 2019 CES Las Vegas Keynote Speech. This is what the Consumer Electronics Association said about the announcement:
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao will deliver a keynote titled The New Mobility Revolution at CES® 2019 – the largest, most influential tech event in the world. Secretary Chao will speak at 11 AM, on Wednesday, Jan. 9 focusing on the future of drones and self-driving technology and how they will revolutionize transportation…Owned and produced by CTA, CES 2019 will run Jan. 8-11, 2019, in Las Vegas. Secretary Chao also spoke at CES 2018, where she discussed how technology and disruptive innovation have the potential to make transportation safer while connecting Americans and American business to greater opportunity.
This is what Secretary Chao said to Bloomberg by way of SnappyTV at CES 2018:

In 2018 at CES Las Vegas, Secretary Chao’s speech and focus was far more theoretical and pie-in-the-sky about Smart Cities. Take a look at the introduction for her prior to CES 2018:
“U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao will headline the Smart Cities conference programming at CES 2018 next month. Chao and Consumer Technology Association (CTA) president/CEO Gary Shapiro will have a candid conversation about the intersection of technology and disruptive innovation transforming cities, making transportation safer, improving efficiencies and connecting Americans and American business to greater opportunity,” said CTA.

What To Expect From Elaine L. Chao At CES 2019 Keynote
In the press release, CES and CTA’s Shapiro says:
“As America’s highest-ranking transportation official, Secretary Chao is leading the Administration’s efforts to realize the promise of transportation technology and innovation -including self-driving vehicles, piloted and unmanned drones – while ensuring public safety. The future of transportation will be on display at CES. And Secretary Chao’s discussion of the DOT’s latest initiatives will provide a roadmap for industry, domestic and international government officials at CES and across the globe.” Then CEA informs us that “Following Secretary Chao’s address, a panel of experts will discuss the importance of establishing public trust to ensure consumers understand the benefits of self-driving vehicles and that deployment of the technology is safe.”
This time, CES and CTA’s Shapiro has another agenda, and it’s this proposed legislation commentary impacting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA):
The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA), on today’s U.S. House of Representatives vote on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2018:
“The UAS title in this bill helps clear the way for the FAA to implement beyond-line-of-sight, flight-over-people and nighttime drone operations, which our nation needs to fully realize the benefits of drone technology. The UAS title also outlines ways consumers may fly their drones responsibly without being grounded by unreasonable rules. The drone portion of this bill provides a boost of clarity and confidence to this growing sector of the tech industry, and we look forward to swift passage by the House and Senate.”
The latest CTA’s Consumer Technology Sales and Forecasts Report shows consumer drones are one of the fastest growing product categories for the U.S. tech industry with total sales expected to reach over $1 billion in revenue this year. CTA’s membership includes both commercial and recreational U.S. drone companies.
