Frank Somerville Suspended Update: KTVU’s Amber Eikel Posts Gabby Petito AP Racism Article Two Days After Suspending Anchor The question is why did Ms. Eikel do this?

Did Eikel do this out of guilt, a cover-your-bum move, or something else? Amber Eikel is KTVU’s news director – a position she has held since 2017.

This is a follow-up from the original post based on Blogger Rich Lieberman’s breaking news story that KTVU had suspended its popular anchor Frank Somerville, but reports were that the reason was solely because Frank wanted to make social media posts blasting Gabby Petito and Brian Landrie Case news coverage as showing a media bias toward white people in missing persons cases. Given Lieberman’s blog post, I still do not believe that was the only reason for Frank’s ouster, which Rich reports as being a final action, but time will tell.

Frank had terrible performances last week at points, according to Rich, who follows Somerville’s moves as well as those of San Francisco Bay Area media personalities. Well, old media personalities, not social media influencers or vloggers like me.

This excerpt from the Associated Press post at the KTVU Fox 2 website reads as follows:

The disappearance of Gabby Petito, a white 22-year-old woman who went missing in Wyoming last month during a cross-country trip with her boyfriend, has drawn a frenzy of coverage on traditional and social media, bringing new attention to a phenomenon known as “missing white woman syndrome.”

Many families and advocates for missing people of color are glad the attention paid to Petito’s disappearance has helped unearth clues that likely led to the tragic discovery of her body and they mourn with her family. But some also question why the public spotlight so important to finding missing people has left other cases shrouded in uncertainty.

“I would have liked that swift rush, push to find my aunt faster. That’s all I wish for,” said Warren, who lives in Utah, one of several states Petito and boyfriend Brian Laundrie passed through.

I, Zennie Abraham, have to say that for Amber Eikel to green light this post, or do it herself since she knows how to do website editing, doesn’t help make the situation better. I think Ms. Eikel was trying to say that the reason Frank was suspended had nothing to do with the Gabby Petito and racism in media discussion. Her effort may have backfired.

What Frank Somerville wanted was to use social media to bring this matter to light from his perspective. What Amber did, or, I assert she did, was to now change the argument to ask new questions: is Frank going to be back to talk about this on the air? Is Amber trying to say that media coverage complaint, or the desire to put them out there, were not the reason Frank was taken off the air?

Stay tuned.

Note from Zennie62Media’s Zennie62 YouTube and Oakland News Now Today Blog SF Bay Area: this video-blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media , Inc. mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
