Facebook Critics Of Allen Michaan’s Grand Lake Theater Marquee Messages Are Not From Oakland
ONN – Facebook Critics Of Allen Michaan’s Grand Lake Theater Marquee Messages Are Not From Oakland – vlog by Zennie62 YouTube
Grand Lake Theater Owner Allen Michaan’s marquee messages have been as much a part of Oakland culture as Lake Merritt, itself. The missives were once focused on a topic in popular culture, but over the last 21 years, they became far more politically focused.
Allan’s marquee messages increased in bite with the severity of attacks on our very democracy. Under President Donald Trump, Allen threw the communications equivalent of haymakers when he wrote “YOU’RE FIRED” regarding Trump’s election loss.
All of this was nice for local talk, but with the advent of social media, and the decline of paper-based news, the words on the front of Oakland’s Grand Lake Theater (what KALW called a “neon soapbox”) became a rallying cry for the left.
And where was that rallying cry posted the most? Facebook and Twitter. But on Facebook, something else sprang up as well, and particularly after the 2020 Presidential Election: the emergence of anti-Grand Lake marquee posts.
I first noticed them in December, and much to my personal horror because it was not seen before. Allan’s marquee messages were kind of like sitting in front of a living room television, only you shared it with an entire city. That feeling transferred to whatever Facebook group I was in – until December.
Then, it occurred to me to look at the Facebook profiles of the folks writing the missives, and all except one (about five in all) had one thing in common: they were not from Oakland. Two were from San Francisco, and then one from Texas, and another from I can’t remember, but it wasn’t Oakland. That was weird.
Then, I remembered that the groups I was in had public access, and so any jo or josie from anywhere could post something. That was not the case before December; at least not with respect to the topic of Oakland’s Grand Lake Theater. That changed.
So, my suggestion when you see a post that’s attacking one of Allan’s marquee messages, is this: check the Facebook profile and determine where they’re from.
Stay tuned.

Note from Zennie62Media’s Zennie62 YouTube and Oakland News Now Today Blog SF Bay Area: this video-blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media , Inc. mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
