ONN – In 1994, Jerry Brown Blasted Kaiser Permanente For It’s Plan To Leave Oakland For Emeryville
On Monday, June 17th, Kaiser Permanente announced plans to build a 28-story, 1.6 million square foot, new headquarters called The Kaiser Permanente Thrive Center, at a cost of $900 million, and in the heart of Uptown Oakland.
What a far cry from 1994, when the same Kaiser Permanente was actively working to move its headquarters to Emeryville, shunning alternatives offered by the City of Oakland. Kaiser Permanente was criticized by many, including this blogger in a publication called The Montclarion, and a former California Governor who had just moved to Oakland and took up residence at Jack London Square: Jerry Brown.
Jerry Brown was a thorn in Kaiser’s side, ultimately filing a lawsuit against the medical organization in Oakland.
At the time, no one really knew what Jerry was planning except Jerry. But what was clear was the man who gained a great deal of fame for a persona as unique as California itself could still draw a crowd. Thus, his appearance at the November 3rd, 1994 late-night Emeryville Planning Commission made the event better than television; there was a standing-room-only crowd. (I am in the video, sitting behind Governor Brown.)
Eventually, Kaiser caved in to pressure and remained in Oakland. Governor Brown ran for and won the 1998 Oakland Mayoral Election (almost brought a Super Bowl to Oakland), and then ran for a won the seat of California Attorney General, and then in 2010, regained his seat as Governor of California, where he served another two terms until 2018.
Arguably, the new Jerry Brown was born on November 3rd, 1994.
Stay tuned.
