Oakland Evictions Story: NBC Bay Area Targets Black Exec, Not White Mayor

ONN – Oakland Evictions Story: NBC Bay Area Targets Black Exec Michele Byrd, Not White Mayor Libby Schaaf.

UPDATE: Libby Schaaf fires Michele Byrd after Oakland evictions story.

Oakland Evictions, and more specifically illegal evictions, have been a long-standing problem. According to the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, the problem is over 10 years old and has only worsened over the last four years.

So, you would think the media would ask the elected officials what is going on? But rather than do that, NBC Bay Area picks on a black department head, while the Mayor of Oakland has curried favor with some of the owners of the real estate firms that are doing these unlawful detainers. Michele Byrd took the fall for the Mayor of Oakland and the Oakland City Council, when it’s really the fault of Oakland elected officials. NBC Bay Area didn’t even bother to talk to the Mayor Of Oakland, Libby Schaaf.

If Libby were African American, the bet here is that the media would have put her face on the problem.

Not The Oakland Housing Authority

Also, it was not the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) that was the focus of this report, as others wrongly reported, but the City of Oakland Department of Housing and Community Development. The OHA is ran by its executive director, Eric Johnson.

Also, the City of Oakland Staffer said that the person tabbed to replace her is white; Michele Byrd is black.

Stay tuned.
