As the video’s thumbnail and our talk shows, Price’s act of intimidation is horrible and horrifying. To think that the sitting Alameda County District Attorney believes it’s just fine to use the power of her office to intimidate a political opponent, and that she’s not been legally punished for it as of this writing, sends up the worst visions of anti-democratic authoritarianism. California Chief Justice Charles Evens Hughes once wrote that “The security of the republic will be found in the treatment of the poor and ignorant. in indifference to their misery and helplessness lies disaster.” Given the way Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price has treated mothers who are the victims of violent crimes done to their children, we have reached that point where the security of the republic is in peril.
