ISSUES, the popular independent magazine and bookstore that was once located at 20 Glen Ave just off Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, was about to close its doors this year. The good news is ISSUES will remain open, and it’s at a new location: 644 40th Street #102 near Mac Arthur BART Station. This is thanks to a successful fundraising campaign on Indiegogo that raised $18,815 to date.
The ISSUES owners report via their YouTube video, newsletter and blog post…
“We started ISSUES in June of 2007 on a whim when we couldn’t find a magazine that we were looking for anywhere. We opened the store with the intention of being a place where print could thrive and we still have that mission today. Over the years, we have been a hub of activity, hosting events such as art shows, book readings, and parties for the community. We are proud to be part of the Oakland landscape. After eleven years of championing print at a time when it was said that ‘print was dead,’ we realized that we need to make some bold changes in order to keep ISSUES alive and stay in Oakland….
“Currently, we have just five days left in our campaign, and we have reached 75% of our goal! We would like to ask you to please look over our page one more time to see all of the new perks we have added, or if you have considered donating but haven’t yet, we’d appreciate it so much if you’d take the time to do so now before the campaign ends. We’d love to meet our goal and secure a strong future for print media for the Oakland community and beyond! Again, we couldn’t be more grateful for all of your support”
