History:
OMI was founded in 2001 after a hard-fought two-year campaign led by then Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown. Governor Gray Davis helped secure the charter after local school boards rejected it. It was the first charter ever sponsored by the state, the first public military school, and the first school sponsored by the National Guard.
The Oakland Military Institute is a Charter school run by the California National Guard in partnership with the Oakland Unified School District. Here’s the down and dirty. Our whole goal is to prep your kid for College by any means necessary.
We put your kid through Mentally, Physically, and most importantly, Academically challenging situations. We use Military structure to keep the learning environment, well, a learning environment. We serve 6th – 12th graders and although many of us wear Military Uniforms, we don’t push the Military. Your child is going to College!
