KTVU’s Frank Somerville For Mayor Of Oakland? Why Not? Would You Vote For The Suspended TV Anchor?

During the brouhaha over the news broke by Oakland Blogger and friend Rich Lieberman that KTVU suspended Frank Somerville and allegedly for just wanting to talk and post about Gabby Petite and the racial disparities in media where white women are given far more attention than black women, men, or children, the Skyline High School Class of 1980 graduate then dropped this bit of news:

*Rumor on street: that Somerville seeks to run for Mayor of Oakland and abandon his TV News anchor career: juicy, funny and NOT A CHANCE.

And so one should dismiss the idea?  Rich is slipping.  He tossed a grenade out there and forgot to pull the clip.  That the idea such a heavy-hitter as Somerville would even consider running for Mayor of Oakland is story worthy of a headline or many, and consideration.  I say Frank Somerville should run for Mayor of Oakland.  Moreover, I would vote for him.  Here’s why.

Of All The Reasons Frank Somerville’s Fatherhood To His Daughter Is A Major Reason To Vote For Him To Be Mayor of Oakland

First, Frank is a non-elected official and non-politician who would come into the Mayor’s Office with fresh eyes and a desire to make change.  That would make him open to trying new approaches to policy implementation and project financing, rather than be stuck in the current mud we’re in right now in Oakland.

Second, Frank Somerville has 30 years of experience with KTVU, which is headquartered in Oakland (as much as it tries to fake being in San Francisco).  That means the KTVU Anchor has 30 years of adult experience in living in, paying attention to, and reporting on Oakland, including government.  That’s more than each one of the current candidates for Mayor of Oakland.  Moreover, he’s a graduate of San Francisco State University, and while he was born in San Luis Obispo, California, Somerville was raised in Berkeley and attended Berkeley High School

Third, Frank’s adopted daughter is black.  Raising Callie Somerville in Oakland and the East Bay has given Frank a unique view of Oakland, America, and the World.  And, he’s learned a lot, by his own admission.  As Mayor of Oakland, Frank would have the perfect platform to address his concerns about media, crime-fighting, and economic development.  KTVU could not shut him down, and Somerville would have the legislative and financial power to right a number of civic wrongs, and advance the policy rights.

Fourth, as a media person, Frank understands better than most how Oakland is portrayed and knows the truth.  He could change how media covers Oakland.

Fifth, and again because of his fatherhood to Callie, Frank Somerville could really unite Oakland in a way no over candidate can.  Moreover, his position as Mayor of Oakland can help unite America and reach young people of color.

Those are my reasons.  Look, Frank has not said a total “NO” to the idea.  Moreover, I think it’s something KTVU would get behind.

Stay tuned.

This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
