Mark Rutte made the comments Monday while speaking at a panel discussing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. Not only are countries still not meeting the current two per cent target spend – with just a few months left to meet that goal – but the number needs to move up “considerably” later in the year, Rutte said. In order to meet the two per cent goal on time – while changing the “trajectory” of the conflict – Rutte suggested NATO allies “step up and not scale back” support for Ukraine. “For [peace] to be sustainable, we have to make sure that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin will never ever, ever again try to get a square kilometre of Ukraine,” Rutte added.
