Trial lawyer Steven Donziger was disbarred, and that is really too sad for him, but the fact is, Donziger used methods to get his way in Ecuador that, by his own admission, would have gotten him disbarred in America.
Let’s see, Steven Donziger admitted to bribing judges, paying protestors, and writing the judgment that led to the original $19 billion award order from Ecuador’s court. To do that, Donziger became pals with then-Ecuador President Rafael Correa, and looked the other way as PetroEcuador, the state-run oil production company, continued on an activity of polluting the Amazon using substandard oil production methods.
And in 2011 PetroEcuador was the culprit behind one of the largest oil spills in history. Yet, PetroEcuador and Ecuador told the media it was Chevron’s fault. And the media bought it.
And while Correa claimed to be an environmentalist, he was working to sell oil drilling rights in the Amazon to Chinese companies.
The fact is that Chevron was never in Ecuador and PetroEcuador has been allowed to get away with polluting the Amazon for years while so-called enviromentalists looked the other way, or tried to profit from the situation. The latter is what Donziger tried to do, and the U.S. Courts got him.
