The ships are part of “Baltic Sentry,” an operation to protect critical infrastructure following a string of incidents in which power cables, telecom links and gas pipelines have been damaged amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The Bulgarian shipping company Navigation Maritime Bulgare denies its ship’s crew intentionally severed the cable. “The ship was sailing in very bad weather conditions,” said CEO Aleksandar Kalchev. “It is possible that the ship had caused the problem with the cable. But in my opinion, there is absolutely no way that we’re talking an act of sabotage or whatever action on behalf of our crew.” Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina said Sunday the country was cooperating “closely” with Sweden and NATO to investigate the incident and help protect critical infrastructure.
