I received an interesting letter from Siegemedia’s Karlyn McKell. It went like this:

Hi Zennie,

I hope you are staying safe and healthy! Since you cover news about Oakland, I thought you’d be interested in our city study results that named Oakland the most house-poor in the West.

Rankings were based on key factors such as median home price, median household income, and homeownership rate. You can view the entire list of rankings here.

Because affordable housing is a top concern for city dwellers, especially in the current economic climate, I thought residents in your area would be interested in this ranking. It may even spark some meaningful discussions on what your city can do better to improve affordability moving forward.

If you’re interested in covering, I’d be happy to send over the image embed code and some custom copy. I would love to hear your thoughts!

And this photo:

As for my thought, shockers! It does not surprise me, and points to Oakland’s collective governmental inaction after so many years of effective government. We have become incompetent in managing government to better our lives. Oakland still has many tools available to build affordable housing, but it has a government that has allowed more market rate housing than it really needs. There was no reason for Oakland to move in the direction of mega market rate housing other than pure greed. Now, the Coronavirus has placed a giant focus on how that problem has impacted Oakland’s population.

Stay tuned.

Note from Zennie62Media and Oakland News Now: this video-blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media , Inc. mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
