Oakland, CA – Tomorrow, Oakland City Staff will report back on the implementation of Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan’s Resolution expanding solutions to address the growing homelessness crisis, which City Council passed in April. Oakland City Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, 10/30, at 5:30pm at Oakland City Hall, 3rd Floor.

Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan’s Resolution directed Staff to take multiple actions to help solve the homelessness crisis, including:
· Consider amending the City’s business tax ordinance to waive the first $30,000 annually in residential rental property income from tax for property rented through Section 8 or other means-tested housing assistance programs, as a means of encouraging the development of low cost housing alternatives
· Identify public land available for expanded housing options, and for a site for “The Village”
Councilmember Kaplan says: “The goal of my Resolution is to encourage and support the private development of expanded housing options, including those offered by non-profits, faith-based organizations, private property owners, and service providers working on private land to provide housing and sanitary facilities for the homeless through strategies including ‘small homes,’ shipping container conversion homes, manufactured housing, recreational vehicles, unattached trailers, restroom structures, and other options to provide dignity, privacy, and disease control. By creating safe spaces, and ultimately, tiny homes and more, in partnership with our congregations, with access to toilets, water, services and more, we can help remedy this crisis, and help people get into better situations.”
