Oakland Mayor Schaaf, Steph Curry: College Aide Applications Due March 2

The Oakland Unified School District sent the press release below and Mayor Schaaf, Steph Currry video above to Zennie62Media

Oakland, CA – Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors and the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) want you to know that you can sign up for Federal Student Aid for college, and the California Dream Act, and you should do it now!

Thousands of OUSD seniors are thinking about where they will attend college in fall of 2019. One important aspect of the process is applying for financial aid, and the deadline to apply for federal aid is just days away. Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid for college (FAFSA) is an important first step toward receiving federal, state, and other financial aid for college.

Completing the FAFSA and the California Dream Act application – at no cost – is an important first step for students to qualify for money to pay for college (2 and 4 year schools) and career training programs. This will help remove or reduce the financial barriers that exist for many students to higher education.

In fact, just last year in OUSD, students received more than $5 million in state and federal aid by completing and submitting the FAFSA and CA Dream Act forms by the deadline. This money can be used to attend a college in California or out of state. Many California students qualify for Cal Grants of up to $12,630 per year for students attending University of California schools and $5,742 for students attending California State University schools. Additionally, Cal Grants do not have to be repaid.

As we have now finished Day 5 of the OEA strike, we want to make sure our graduating seniors have the support and space to complete the FAFSA and California Dream Act application. So, college advising and certificated staff will be at locations across Oakland to support our students and families. We have spaces set up at:

● Mills College, 5000 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland in Room 101, Stern Hall
● Laney College, 900 Fallon St, Oakland in Building A, Room 101
● Youth Uprising, 8711 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland
● The Boys and Girls Club, 3300 High St, Oakland

College advisors will be supporting all OUSD seniors on Thursday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For students who attend these workshops, we will be raffling off prizes including tickets to Warriors games and A’s games and gift cards.

Families, please send your student with a completed field trip permission slip to any of the community spaces listed above. If your student does not have a permission slip, we can call you when your student arrives to obtain your verbal permission.

Students who need more information can contact Ay’Anna Moody, OUSD’s College Access Coordinator at ay’[email protected].
