Oakland OUSD Responds: Governor Gavin Newsom Says Schools Will Not Reopen Before End Of Term

OUSD Issues Statement in Response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s Belief that Schools Will Not Reopen Before End of 2019-20 School Year

In the KPIX video above, California Governor Gavin Newsom said that the pandemic was likely to keep many schools closed through the summer. Below is the Oakland Unified School District’s response.

Oakland, CA — This is OUSD’s response to what Governor Gavin Newsom said about schools remaining closed through the end of the current school year because of the coronavirus pandemic:

“We want nothing more than to have our students and staff back in our schools, but we recognize that these are extraordinary times in our world. What Governor Newsom said today may not have been the biggest surprise knowing how this pandemic is spreading across our country, but still the idea of our schools being closed for several months is daunting for all of us. We expect to learn more about what the governor meant in the coming days. In fact, we will be hearing from State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond tomorrow morning, who may share with us more details about what the state is planning for the rest of the school year. We will keep our students, families and staff informed as we gather more information.”
