The two Oakland Public Library groups that help to sustain it are seeking new members, and they specifically want a diverse group of folks. So, if you thought being part of Friends of Oakland Public Library Board or the City of Oakland Library Advisory Commission was something you wanted to do, but believed it was closed to you, as a black or Latino / black Oaklander, via racism, think again. Friends of Oakland Public Library is…
- Oakland Public Library’s nonprofit fund-raising arm. Owns Bookmark Bookstore in Old Oakland.
- BOARD SKILL SETS NEEDED: Fund-raising. Event-planning. Membership development.
- Meets every other month on first Wednesday (5:15 p.m.) at the Main Library, with additional committee meetings/activity as needed.
- No term limit (Unless you piss off the board, or something.)
City of Oakland Library Advisory Commission…
- Provides mandated citizen oversight of Measure Q (existing parcel tax providing funds for OPL). May also provide oversight for new Measure D parcel tax, but this is not yet confirmed. Other missions: Advise City Council and Library Administration as needed on service-delivery issues. Advocate for OPL funding.
- BOARD SKILL SETS NEEDED: Financial literacy. Budget monitoring. Advocacy.
- Meets last Monday (5:15 p.m.) of each month at Main Library.
- Term length is 3 years; commissioners may request reappointment to a second 3-year term.
