Oakland Schools News: Information on Vaccines, COVID Tests, Returning to School in January

Thursday, December 23, 2021

Dear Oakland Unified Community,

We hope that the winter break is treating you well, and that you are enjoying peaceful time with family and friends. As more and more people travel and get together with loved ones, it’s important to be careful, as we’re still in the middle of a pandemic.

We know many OUSD students ages 12 and up are getting vaccinated in advance of the student COVID-19 vaccine requirement passed by the Board of Education that takes effect on January 1, 2022. (Many 5-11 year olds are also getting vaccinated.) Families, please make sure your student joins them as soon as possible. Details on how and where to get vaccinated are below.

All students, staff, and families should remember to:

  • Get vaccinated
  • Wear a mask
  • Avoid large crowds
  • Get tested for COVID-19

COVID TESTING

At Home Testing
We all need to do our part to ensure we are not spreading COVID, regardless of whether we have symptoms. To support this effort, every student was sent home with a test kit containing two rapid tests. The first test should be taken by your student on Sunday, January 2. The second test should be taken on Wednesday, January 5. Please make sure they take the test on both days even if they don’t have symptoms.

We also encourage testing anytime you deem necessary during the holiday season to protect yourself and your loved ones. For additional testing, either visit a testing site or get another at home kit.

For more information, please see this document in multiple languages or watch the video below for instructions on using the at home test. The video is also available in Spanish and Mam, and other languages will follow soon and be posted at www.ousd.org/covidtestvideos.

Sharing Test Results
Test results should be uploaded to Primary. If students are already registered in Primary, you can search for the original text message received and click the link. You can also go to ousd.org/covidtestingregistration, enter your student’s information, and you will be sent a new link. If your student is not registered for Primary, you can enroll at ousd.org/covidtestingregistration. If you are unable to upload results to Primary, please send them to [email protected]Please notify your school immediately of a positive test result, in addition to uploading the result to Primary.

OUSD COVID Testing Sites
OUSD students, families and staff are welcome to visit any of our testing sites over the break. You can schedule an appointment here or just walk up any time, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Additionally, more community testing sites can be found at https://covid-19.acgov.org/testing.

COVID VACCINE

How to get vaccinated
To get vaccinated or to receive your booster shot, please visit your healthcare provider, local pharmacy, community vaccine clinic, or any of our upcoming school-based vaccine clinics. Vaccines are currently available at CVS, Safeway, and Walgreens and you can also visit MyTurn.CA.gov or www.Vaccines.gov to find clinics and pharmacies that are offering the Pfizer vaccine and have open appointments for patients at least five years old.

The City of Oakland is also hosting two vaccine and testing clinics – one at Frank Ogawa Plaza in Downtown Oakland (open M-F) and the other in the Fruitvale neighborhood (open Sat-Wed). For details, visit the city of Oakland website.

We have been hosting on-campus vaccine clinics in partnership with the county all semester, and will continue doing so at multiple schools through January. Remember that COVID-19 vaccines are free, safe, and effective, and our best form of protection as we move through this holiday season.

How to share vaccination card
If your student has been vaccinated, please send a copy of their vaccination card to [email protected]. All families who have a child 12 or older, whose record the District does not have, will receive text messages, emails, and phone calls asking for updated vaccination information over the next several weeks. Please make sure we have your student’s updated vaccination status, including a copy of their vaccination card.

We wish you a restful and rejuvenating holiday season.

Thank you.
