The Oracle NetSuite Open Squash 2018 San Francisco has been a rousing success, even if it was marked by a slew of upsets (or because of them, depending on your point of view). Let’s take a look at where we’ve come from in the standings, and where we are in the standings, headed into Sunday’s action. We start, first, with the female participants.
To start, the women’s bracket advanced from a round of 32, to 16, to the quarterfinals, and now Sunday we are in to the semifinals. The bracket shows that, first, Raneem El Weleily started with a bye, then defeated Holly Naughton in the Round of 16, and then Alison Waters, in the quarterfinals. Now on this Sunday, she waits to take on Laura Massaro in the semifinals.
Ms. Massaro’s own path to the epic battle with Raneem El Weleily looked like this: she started with a bye, then dispatched Donna Lobban in the Round of 16, and shockingly dominated Nicol David in the quarterfinals.
The winner of the Massaro v. El Weleily squash row will take on the winner of the Annie Au vs. Sarah-Jane Perry semifinals match. How Au and Perry got to their meetup is equally interesting.
Ms. Au started with a bye, then beat Milou van der Heijden in the Round of 16, then overcame Camille Serme in the quarterfinals.
(It must be noted that Camille Serme, herself, got there by strong-arming the comeback-kid Amanda Sobhy, who returned to San Francisco and the Oracle NetSuite Open after a long layoff of physical rehabilitation. Amanda’s a popular player who’s helped the sport of Squash grow Worldwide, so it’s quite gratifying to see her back in action.)
Sarah-Jane Perry also started with a bye, then beat Salma Harry in the Round of 16, and then won over Joelle King in the quarterfinals.
So we have Massaro vs. El Weleily and Au vs. Perry. The winners of Sunday’s semifinals battles will play for all the marbles, as they say, in the finals, Tuesday, October 2, at 7:15 PM.
The Men’s Bracket in the Oracle NetSuite Open Squash 2018 San Francisco Championship
The Men’s Bracket in the Oracle NetSuite Open Squash 2018 San Francisco Championship shows that, first, Mohamed ElShorbagy started with a bye, then defeated Gregoire Marche in the Round of 16, and then Miguel Angel Rodriguez, in the quarterfinals. Now on this Sunday, he will do battle with Karim Abdel Gawad in the semifinals in the court cube.
Karim Abdel Gawad’s path looked like this: he started with a bye before defeating Abdulla Al Tamimi in the Round of 16, then stepping over Tarek Momen in the quarterfinals to get to this day. He takes on Mohamed ElShorbagy for the right to play the winner of the to-be-determined (as of this writing) bracket that as of now consists of the winners of the Gregory Gaultier vs.Simon Rosner match and the Diego Elias vs. Ali Farag dust-up – both of which will occur in the glass court Sunday evening, starting at 6:30 PM PST.
