OUSD Celebrates 2021-22 High School Homecomings
Oakland – In a year that redefined what “home” means because the pandemic kept so many of us at home for so long, students and staff have been excited to return to the pomp and circumstance of the in-person school year. One of the big events of every regular school year at the high school level is Homecoming. It’s when alumni return to campus to celebrate the tradition and the importance of the school in their lives, along with an energized student body filled with school pride, and fun spirit competition between classes within each school. Homecoming includes school events such as pep rallies, dances, and football games. OUSD’s six comprehensive high schools generally have homecoming, and this year, three of them have had theirs, and one more had a partial celebration. The final two happen Friday, November 5.
Fremont High School’s Homecoming Court, student body, and football team all showed their school pride.
McClymonds High School celebrates Homecoming on Friday with JV and Varsity football games against Skyline High School. Oakland Technical High School hosts its Homecoming on Friday with JV and Varsity games against Fremont High School. Both McClymonds and Oakland Tech have had issues or incidents this year that have challenged the school communities, so, each school is looking forward to positive, inclusive, and fun celebrations. At each school, the community is invited to come out to the game and help celebrate the history, legacy, and greatness of the schools.
There was lots of joy at Castlemont’s Homecoming, including from the mother of a recently deceased former player who was honored at the game.
“Homecoming is a wonderful time of year for schools, when their communities come together, cheer each other on, show school pride, and share their common love for their campus,” said Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell. “I know that the Homecomings that have already happened at Castlemont, Oakland High, Fremont High, and partially at Skyline all went well, and I look forward to more great celebrations at McClymonds and Oakland Tech. I know this is a time when all schools will show themselves to be the spirited, caring, inclusive communities that they are.”
The spirit rivalry between classes at Oakland High was on full display for Homecoming.
OUSD asks everyone who attends any Homecoming events, including games, to make sure to adhere to proper COVID safety practices to protect your health and the health of those around you.
