Outside Lands, the now 10-year-old music festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, August 10-12, 2018, may have an SF Bay Area economic impact of $75 million, but the unanswered question is why?
Is it the fact that it’s nationally important? Did you know that for the first time Outside Lands will feature two women headline performers, the legendary Janet Jackson and GRAMMY-nominated British indie rock band Florence + The Machine? Or maybe its a weird media tech reason like these Outside Lands search terms: outside lands 2018 tickets, outside lands lineup 2018, outside lands 2017, outside lands 2018 dates, outside lands tickets, outside lands 2018 lineup announcement, outside lands 2018 single day tickets outside lands 2016?
Oakland News Online / Zennie62Media pondered that question, and after not being able to find a stated answer, got a flash of insight: the sheer size of Outside Lands draws people. There are 74 performer by our count, and 83 food providers, too. That’s 157 artists and food vendors at Outside Lands for 2018.
Folks, it’s not just the list of legendary names like Beck or Radiohead, or Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, or CAKE, or Steve Winwood, or Pearl Jam, or Furthur featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, or Metallica, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, or Paul McCartney, or Kanye West, or E-40 & Warren G, that has attracted fans to Outside Lands, it’s the fact that you have a giant set of star musicians – legends – in one place for one weekend.
Then, add to that the equally large (well, ok, larger) list of star Bay Area food providers from San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and many more places in the region, and you have a collection that’s built a critical mass of people who want to come and see what they’re offering to eat, and artists are playing for them to enjoy.
It’s no wonder Outside Lands draws 200,000 people. If it were billed as a convention, it would be the largest in the World: bigger than CES Las Vegas and San Diego Comic Con, which draw between 160,000 and 170,000 people. And while both have larger economic impacts of $150 million for San Diego Comic Con and $154 million for CES Las Vegas, that’s due to the fact that they’re designed as conferences. Outside Lands is an event for San Francisco and the SF Bay Area to eat, hear great music, and have a good time.
