Oakland News Now – Paul Hlebcar is a legendary singer and guitarist who performs at The Alley at 3325 Grand Avenue in Oakland, near Lake Merritt and The Grand Lake Theater. Tonight, he played Bob Dylan’s “Love Minus Zero / No Limit” at the piano, as Norman, an Alley regular, sang.
The Alley is known as the home of the late, great, piano player Rod Dibble, who passed away last year. Paul has continued playing in his Tuesday through Thursday time slot and his focus on folk tunes. The Alley’s format is such that patrons come in and request a song that they then sing themselves – much different from the standard piano bar.
The Alley has been an Oakland bar going back to the Speakeasy Era and 1931. Rod Dibble started playing at the Oakland landmark in 1960. Paul Hlebcar has been at the guitar At The Alley since 2006, and specializes in Bob Dylan. Moreover, Mr. Hlebcar has a 20-year-plus history as a bandleader and musician in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Alley is open Seven days a week and has a great kitchen that’s known for steaks. They start dinner at 6 PM each evening.
Mr. Hlebcar has a new CD avalable now. Visit his website at http://www.paulguitar.com.
Stay tuned.
