Perry Baker draws a crowd. In a sport not known for fans mobbing players, Mr. Baker’s presense created a line of people – all who wanted to take a photo with him, or just shake his hand. For that moment in time here at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco, Perry Baker could have set up a make-shift lemonade stand and made some good coin for himself. But the former Arena League Football player was content to just do the impromptu meet-and-greet. Most of all, Perry was taken in by the pageantry of it all.
“The whole season’s been a built-up for this. The advertising has been crazy. The ‘Pioneer’ documentary on cable. It’s go time!”
Perry Baker is quite simply one of the best Rugby Sevens players in the World. But, considering his status, you’d think he would tired of all of the talk of how good The All Blacks Area. Not so. Well, not exactly: “Well, no, I don’t hear about them. I mean, every team’s a great team, today, you know. It’s not like I hear about the All Blacks. I mean, they’re good. Howeever Rugby goes, to get people all out, I’m for it.”
Then, more and more fans came up to Baker. With that scene, you’d think he was one of the Rolling Stones, or something.
It’s all just another day for Baker. But for Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018, when the play starts, it’s go time!
Stay tuned.
