Pita is the San Francisco 49ers second year pass rusher who made the transition from rugby, and became an asset to the young Niners Defense. But on this weekend and this World Championship Sunday, the Tonga rugby star said he would rather be playing down there on the field, than watching in the stands.

As the story goes, Pita Taumoepenu grew up with his mother’s family 3,000 miles away from island of Tongatapu, which is the main island in the Tongan archipelago. There, the common sport is rugby, and while he was terrific at that sport, he had to get used to wearing a facemask. But that little impediment didn’t stop him from being an effective pass rusher at Utah, where he earned his sociology degree in just three years. Then, he was taken in the 6th round by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2017 NFL Draft.
