Rashidah Grinage, one of the creators of the Oakland Coalition for Police Accountability, talked about the Oakland City Counciil’s vote to advance the ballot measure that, if passed this November, would form a staff for, and make, a more independent Oakland Police Commission.
Then, Rashidah Grinage talked about the calls to “Defund the Police” and pointed to a study called MACRO, for “REPORT ON FEASIBILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A PILOT OFMOBILE ASSISTANCE COMMUNITY RESPONDERS OF OAKLAND (MACRO)” by the Urban Strategies Council. Ms Grinage hold that the Oakland Police Department is already being defunded in a way where a number of non-emergency situations are being “off-loaded” to other City of Oakland Departments.
