OAKLAND, CA – “Broadway Bus Lanes.” Today President Rebecca Kaplan is supporting a Resolution from the Oakland Department of Transportation before the Public Works Committee – Tuesday, September 24 at 11:30AM at Oakland City Hall (Link to Agenda) –
that supports transit improvements by creating dedicated transit only lanes on Broadway, our busiest street, from 11th street to 20th street that will result in up to 30% shorter bus trips and up to 20% more predictable travel times for our residents.
The legislation Rebecca Kaplan is supporting also supports pedestrian improvements by improving crosswalks, and works to coordinate with a portion of the BRT alignment as well, thereby minimizing disruptions to business owners (Link to Report).
In addition, as the City of Oakland begins its review of the Downtown Specific Plan, to grow our downtown, we must increase our invest in our transit infrastructure if we really seek to accommodate more workers and residents in our city center. A bus only lane (“Broadway Bus Lanes”) will also enhance the existing Broadway Shuttle, a free bus service that is a vital in connecting residents to BART, housing, and jobs from Embarcadero West (Jack London Square) to Grand Avenue along Broadway.
