After defeating the Arizona Cardinals 28 to 25 on Thursday Night Football, and in a contest that showed the Cards Defense is the fixable weak link, the San Francisco 49ers are now at 8 and 0, and in this vlogger’s view, a true Super Bowl 54 contender.
In my entire life as a fan of and a vlogger about NFL Football, the team that eventually won the Super Bowl was the one that started out 8-and-0. Among the 53 Super Bowl winners, we have two that went undefeated during the regular season, the 1972 Miami Dolphins and the 2007 New England Patriots. And of those who were in the Super Bowl, win or lose, the 2015 Carolina Panthers were perfect until Week 16, when they lost to the Atlanta Falcons – they played in Super Bowl 50. The 2009 Indianapolis Colts first loss was Week 16 vs. New York Jets, 29-15. But the 2009 Colts wound up in Super Bowl XLIV, losing to the New Orleans Saints 31-17.
There are notable exceptions to my assertion, and point to my romanticism with the idea of going 8 and 0, or beyond. The 2011 Green Bay Packers didn’t lose until Week 15 and the Kansas City Chiefs – they were not in the Super Bowl, having been knocked out during the Divisional Playoffs to the New York Giants 37 to 20. And I’ll never forget the 2005 Indianapolis Colts, which roared through the regular season, posting a 14-2 record, losing to the San Diego Chargers in Week 15, then getting sadly bounced by the eventual Super Bowl XL Champion Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional playoff game.
So, there are many exceptions to the idea that an eight and zero record means the 49ers are headed to Miami. But we can certainly say, they’re headed to the NFL Playoffs.
The next question that will come up if the Niners mark off 10 straight wins is can the ‘run the table’ – go undefeated?
