A 1963 American comedy drama film adapted by James Poe from the 1962 novel of the same name by William Edmund Barrett, and stars Sidney Poitier, Lilia Skala, Stanley Adams, and Dan Frazer. It was praised by critics and received numerous accolades, including five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Lilia Skala. Poitier won the Academy Award for Best Actor, becoming the first African-American actor to win a competitive Academy Award and the second African-American to win, after Hattie McDaniel won for Best Supporting Actress for Gone with the Wind. In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
