Super Bowl LV: 2021 NFLPA Players Summit: Lack Of Black Head Coaches, NFL Systemic Racism Discussed
USA Today NFL Reporter Jarrett Bell struck the match that set this dynamite topic off to explode, and that’s what happened.
To set the stage, this was the National Football League Players Association Annual Players Summit at Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida. The event was right on the heels of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s “State Of The NFL” press conference, which also included NFLPA’s Executive Director DeMaurice Smith.
Before Bell spoke, another reporter asked what the NFL was doing to advance more women players, knowing damn well the league has a problem advancing black players to become head coaches and coordinators, when 70 percent of the NFL players are black, and the top management positions are so white the appearance of a slave plantation is hard not to see. As Sir Richard Branson wrote in his blog regarding the Trump insurrection attempt at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th:
One explanation for the outpouring of hate that is shared by many is that a large portion of America’s electorate is gripped by fear of a rapidly changing world and the dismantling of privilege and power generations of white people have come to take for granted, knowingly or not. There is a widespread sense of panic, of loss of control, both in economic and social terms. And because the complexity of a modern, globalised world is daunting and overwhelming, many turn to a more familiar, simpler narrative of good versus evil, us versus them. All nuance is gone. Rather than making America work for everyone, the goal seems to be to burn it down to its foundations. To what end?

NFLPA’s DeMaurice Smith answered, as did members of the NFLPA Board Of Directors who were in attendance (yes, virtually). The talk formed into a number of emotional takes on the problem, and to an extent that it was hard not to cry in my case. I’d never thought I’d see a situation where one firm remained so stubbornly committed to maintaining the appearance of systemic racism at play in hiring. But here we are, and the NFL need to take action on this before the Biden Administration steps in and makes the League correct the problem.
When the NFL established the Rooney Rule in 2003, the next year, there were three black head coaches. Today, in 2021, there are just three black head coaches.
Stay tuned.
Note from Zennie62Media’s Zennie62 YouTube and Oakland News Now Today Blog SF Bay Area: this video-blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media , Inc. mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
