Kenyan President William Ruto is facing the biggest crisis of his two years in office. Hundreds of protesters have gathered in the capital Nairobi, yet again, to call for his resignation. Police fired tear gas at the crowds and made several arrests. The unrest began in June with rallies against a controversial finance bill that would have raised taxes. Ruto deployed the army and the crackdown killed at least 60 people. Finally, in response to protesters’ demands, Ruto scrapped the bill and reshuffled his cabinet. But many Kenyans are calling for justice for the activists killed — and an end to what they say is endemic government corruption. The latest unrest came while the new cabinet was being sworn in. The UN’s World Health Organization (WHO) has called for a ceasefire in Gaza to facilitate a mass polio vaccination campaign for 600,000 children under the age of eight, following the detection of polio in the enclave’s wastewater. WHO polio specialist Hamid Jafari warned that without a ceasefire and adequate freedom of movement for healthcare workers, the risk of a polio outbreak in Gaza and the region is “very high.” Jafari emphasized that the disease could spread rapidly, posing a direct threat to Gaza’s children and potentially leading to a public health emergency in Israel, the West Bank, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, and other nearby countries. It said if the war continues, economic output could shrink by a third in 2024, compared to what was projected before the war. Poverty across the occupied Palestinian territories could surge to over 60 percent if the war extends to 9 months and the crisis is expected to increase the number of people living in poverty by an additional 1.86 million. The US President Joe Biden has been under pressure, not just by his rival in the upcoming presidential election, former President Donald Trump, but also from the American public, who have been wondering why he’s been absent as these nationwide protests grow on college campuses. There have been comments from the National Security Council spokesperson, the deputy press secretary, the press secretary, all saying pretty much what the president said: that these protests are not within the law, that the White House supports free speech, the right to protest and freedom of assembly, but that it doesn’t support protests that are unlawful. One of the questions asked to President Biden was whether the demonstrations would make him change any of his policies on Gaza. The answer was no, without hesitation or qualification. And that’s what could have quelled this disruption. The fact that he was not willing to budge on that is going to be a problem for Biden, because he needs these young people to win reelection, and he trails Trump in a lot of battleground states. “There is an extraordinary deep anxiety in Gaza” right now, as people fear a possible invasion of Rafah, says Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. The prospects of such an invasion “will all depend on whether a ceasefire deal will be reached this week”, the UNRWA chief said during a briefing in Geneva. “People have not yet been asked to evacuate from Rafah,” he added. “But there is a sense that if there is not a ceasefire deal this week, it could happen at any time.” UNRWA chief Lazzarini says there is more food on offer at markets in northern Gaza after an increase in supply in April. However, these supplies are still far from accessible to most people who have no cash left to spend nearly seven months into the war, he said. Lazzarini also noted that UNRWA officials on the ground in Gaza describe residents as experiencing a constant state of trauma due to ongoing military attacks, hunger and overall deteriorating conditions. “We are not talking any more about PTSD, but CTSD: Constant traumatic stress disorder,” Lazzarini said. Cornell University in the state of New York is suspending enrolment and study for students who participate in campus protests demanding an end to Israel’s war on Gaza. The school says that this is because students set up an encampment which they did not seek permission for. Across many American universities – student protesters have set up encampments on their campuses and are calling for their universities to withdraw investment from companies with links to the Israeli military. Nick Wilson is a Second-year undergraduate student at Cornell University and a protest organiser with the Coalition for Mutual Liberation. He was suspended two days ago for participating in a demonstration at the campus against Israel’s war on Gaza. He joins us from Ithaca, New York to explain his side of the story. Police have moved in to clear out dozens of protesters who had camped out in a courtyard of Sorbonne University in Paris to protest against Israel’s war on Gaza, the Reuters news agency reports, citing a student at the scene. The demonstration took place three days after protests at the French capital’s elite Sciences Po and came in the wake of rallies on campuses across the US against the war. “We have every reason like in Yale, in Columbia, in Sciences Po … to condemn what we can see is happening,” the student, who only gave his name as Leonard, said at another rally outside the gates of the Sorbonne. The university, one of the world’s oldest, closed its buildings for the day during the peaceful protests. Students chanted “Free Palestine” and urged the institution to condemn Israel. Reporting from Paris, Al Jazeera’s Natacha Butler said the protests were continuing outside the university’s gates.
