Residents off the south shore of Nova Scotia witnessed multiple white sharks feasting on a humpback whale carcass. Video footage captured sharks attacking the dead whale, providing a rare glimpse of these majestic creatures in action. Local fisherman Bill Vienneau, who ventured out to witness the spectacle for himself, described the scene as “impressive to watch” as the sharks converged on the whale carcass. Vienneau estimated the largest shark to be roughly 14 feet in length, nearly the size of his own boat. As these sharks are classified as an endangered species in Canada, the presence of the white sharks in local waters and their ability to find nutritional food sources has been noted as a positive sign by experts. A large majority of Canadians have been exposed to Russian false narratives about the war in Ukraine — and people who support the Conservative Party are more susceptible to believing Kremlin disinformation, according to a new report. A survey from DisinfoWatch, part of the MacDonald-Laurier Institute think tank, found that 71 per cent of Canadians polled have heard at least one Russian false narrative and that a substantial portion “believe them to be true or are unsure of their falsehood.” It also found “Conservative supporters, who report the highest exposure levels to Kremlin narratives, are also more likely to believe in them compared to their Liberal and NDP counterparts.” The high percentage of Canadians being exposed to the narratives means “Russian disinformation is, in fact, reaching into Canadian homes,” DisinfoWatch director and co-author of the report Marcus Kolga told Global News. Two months ago, before Israeli troops invaded Rafah, the city sheltered most of Gaza’s more than 2 million people. Today it is a dust-covered ghost town. Abandoned, bullet-ridden apartment buildings have blasted out walls and shattered windows. Bedrooms and kitchens are visible from roads dotted with rubble piles that tower over the Israeli military vehicles passing by. Very few civilians remain. For the first time since Gaza’s southernmost city was invaded on May 6, the Israeli military accompanied international media into Rafah on Wednesday. Israel has barred international journalists from entering Gaza independently since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7. According to the United Nations (UN), around 1.4 million Palestinians crammed into Rafah after fleeing fighting elsewhere in Gaza. The UN estimates that around 50,000 remain in Rafah, which had a pre-conflict population of about 275,000. Hurricane Beryl struck the coast of Texas as a Category 1 storm, causing widespread damage and dangerous conditions. The storm, which weakened from a hurricane after pounding the coastal town of Matagorda, re-strengthened and became a hurricane again late Sunday. During a press conference on Monday, Houston Mayor John Whitmire urged residents to “shelter in place” as the city was hit hard by the storm. “We’re in an emergency, we’re in a rescue mode,” he said. Residents filled up their gas tanks and stocked up on essentials at local grocery stores. “For those of us that do live on the island we’re very well prepared in terms of the flooding,” Texas resident Peyton Schott said. Meanwhile, some beachgoers attempted to enjoy the weather, and lifeguards enforced safety measures and cleared the water for the public’s protection. “I asked him, I was like I can’t swim? Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pledged a retaliation on Russia following deadly missile strikes that killed 29 people across five Ukrainian cities and damaged a key childrens’ hospital in Kyiv Monday morning. “Beyond any doubt, we are going to rebuild everything that these terrorists [Russia] have destroyed. And beyond any doubt, we are going to answer these savages from Russia,” Zelenskyy said during a press conference in Warsaw, Poland on Monday afternoon. Russian forces fired more than 40 missiles targeting different cities, injuring dozens and damaging infrastructure, commercial and residential buildings across Ukraine, as reported by Zelenskyy. Ukraine will initiate a meeting of the United Nations’ security country following the strike, according to Zelenskyy – who is expected to travel to the annual NATO summit in Washington, D.C. this week. Hundreds of Israelis took to the streets on Sunday, blocking a main Tel Aviv junction and other major intersections across the country to demand the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas. The protests, which marked nine months since the Hamas attack, also aimed to put pressure on the Israeli government to reach a hostage deal with Hamas. Demonstrators picketed at the homes of government ministers, calling for an end to the ongoing war and the resignation of the current government. “I’m here to support families of kidnapped Israelis in Gaza. I’m here to oppose my government and to bring this war to an end, hopefully to bring elections and to bring this criminal government down as soon as possible,” said protestor Uri Schachter. The River Seine in Paris is set to be a venue for open swimming events for the upcoming summer Olympics, but the safety of the water has remained an issue for people in the lead-up to the games. Last week, test result showed unsafe levels of E. coli in the river — though new testing this week found the levels of E. coli and enterococci bacteria were below legal thresholds. While health experts say E. coli infection in the water can happen, it’s more an indicator of parasites or viruses that could be contagious. As Sean Previl reports, officials say they’re optimistic the games in the river will go ahead, but it’s yet to be seen what could change in the final weeks before the events. A fire broke out at a partially decommissioned railway trestle in Richmond, causing heavy smoke near the south end of the Oak Street Bridge on Thursday. The plume of smoke was visible from across Metro Vancouver. Video footage showed the flames engulfing the historic Marpole Railroad Bridge, originally constructed in 1902. A Collingwood man has pleaded guilty to the murder of his wife after her body was found inside a burning SUV more than a year ago. In a Barrie courtroom Thursday afternoon, James Schwalm pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 40-year-old Ashley Schwalm. On Jan. 26, 2023, Ontario Provincial Police found a wrecked SUV on Arrowhead Road in Collingwood, which was on fire. Police found Ashley’s body inside the vehicle, and later alleged James – a former Brampton fire captain – murdered her and staged her death. On Feb. 3 police charged him with second-degree murder and indignity to a dead body. On Feb. 17, the charges were upgraded to first-degree murder. In court Thursday, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder. But these actions did not start in 2023. Two wildfires burning near Ruidoso, N.M., killed at least one person and damaged an estimated 1,400 structures — including approximately 500 homes, according to reports. Melissa Fesmire and her son Christopher Bright have lived at least 14 years in Ruidoso, and they say the fires burning through the New Mexico village are like nothing they’ve seen before. Christopher told Reuters on Wednesday that the sound of planes and sirens and the constant smell of smoke made him feel like being “in the middle of a war zone.” New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham told media on Thursday that there will be an additional 200 to 300 firefighting personnel dispatched to aid in extinguishing the blazes. Officials with the City of Calgary will update the critical water main break on Thursday at 2 p.m. MST. Earlier in the day, Mayor Jyoti Gondek cautioned Calgarians that there could still be delays or unplanned setbacks as city crews aim to have water flowing as usual by July 5. In Wednesday afternoon’s update on the two-week-old Calgary water crisis, the city said its regular water supply will likely be restored on the earlier end of the timeline estimate — in about three weeks rather than five. Michael Thompson, general manager of infrastructure services, said that means repairs could be completed by July 5. In a video statement Thursday morning, Gondek said there is still a lot of work to be done before Calgarians can go back to normal water usage, and that the July 5 goal is a “best-case estimate at this point in time.” “We have to be prepared that a potential site may require a bit more of a repair than we expected or that water testing is going to take a little bit more time,” she said. Thousands of Kenyans, mostly young people, poured onto the streets of the capital of Nairobi on Thursday to protest new tax proposals introduced in the government’s annual budget legislation. The demonstrations brought the central business district to a standstill as police threw tear gas cannisters and opened water cannons on protesters as they advanced toward the Parliament buildings. The protesters are demanding legislators vote against the bill and the proposed tax changes, accusing Kenyan President William Ruto on pulling back on his pledge to reduce taxes and lower the cost of living. Among the proposals in the budget are increased taxes on vegetable oil and fuel and a 2.75 per cent levy on income, with the money going toward the national medical insurance program. Proposals to introduce a 16 per cent value-added tax on bread and an annual tax on automobiles were removed Tuesday after a meeting between Ruto and members of the ruling party. Severe weather is wreaking havoc in Monterrey, Mexico and southern Texas as Tropical Storm Alberto batters the region on Thursday. The storm brought heavy rainfall and flooding to the affected areas, prompting road closures and flight cancellations. Mexican officials issued a warning to residents of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, advising them to steer clear of streams or rivers. Businesses in Tampico boarded up their windows and residents stocked up on supplies. “I stocked up on groceries the day before yesterday, with water and the basic things. I protected windows and glass in my apartment, just as they did here. I have an electricity generator, rechargeable batteries in case power goes out or something worse happens,” resident Marco Antonio Rodriguez said. Coastal areas in southern Texas also experienced flooding as the storm moved through the Gulf of Mexico.
